This flu season has affected the dependent population under 18 years old most significantly, comprising 52% of the total positive tests for week 50. Two influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported in DRSi, one of which was in a 14 month-old, unvaccinated patient. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine; this season, injectable flu vaccines are recommended (inactivated or recombinant vaccines). Additionally, it is recommended that pregnant women be vaccinated every year against the flu, as they are at an increased risk for serious flu complications. The vaccine is safe for immunization during any trimester of pregnancy and can protect both pregnant women and their babies from the flu. United States In week 50, widespread influenza activity was reported by 23 states. Regional activity was reported by Puerto Rico and 23 states. Local activity was reported by District of Columbia and 4 states, and sporadic activity was reported by the U.S.V.I. Guam did not report. CDC Virologic Surveillance During week 50, 86.7% (689) of specimens collected for civilian labs tested positive for Influenza A. A(H3N2) accounted for 611 of the 689 samples. 58 were A (H1N1)pdm09 and 20 were not subtyped. Nationwide during week 50, 3.5% of outpatient visits reported in ILINet were due to ILI, above the national baseline of 2.2%. The percentage of ILI outpatient visits ranged from 1.4% to 8.3% across the regions reporting. Laboratory Respiratory Specimen Testing In week 50, 27% (612) of specimens tested positive. Influenza A and B accounted for 65% and 16% of positive specimens, respectively. RSV accounted for 12% of positive specimens. Parainfluenza accounted for 4% and adenovirus accounted for 2% of positive specimens. Week Ending 16 December 2017 (Week 50) ILI Activity Army DRSi Influenza Case Reporting Laboratory Testing for Influenza A In week 50, 400 of 1958 (20.4%) specimens tested positive for influenza A. This is an increase from week 49 (16.5%). 330 (83%) of the positive influenza A specimens were from non-active duty individuals, of which 63% (208) were under 18 years old. RHC-C reported 242 (61%) of the total influenza A-positive specimens. RHC-A reported 119 (30%) influenza A-positive specimens, RHC-P reported 32 (8%) influenza A-positive specimens, and RHC- E reported 7 (2%) positive influenza-a specimen. CENTCOM did not report any positive influenza A specimens. Virologic Surveillance During week 50, incident ILI activity was 7% lower than the same time last year and 1% lower than week 50 in AD SMs accounted for 28% of incident ILI clinic visits during week 50; in , AD SMs comprised 24% of ILI clinic visits on average. Two influenza-associated hospitalizations were reported in DRSi in week 50 in the non-ad population. One case was 14 months old and not vaccinated. The other was hospitalized for pneumonia secondary to flu, and was vaccinated. Season total for this year is 14, whereas five cases were reported during the same time last year.
