rskills Test 7b, page 2 Comprehension Read the following life science text. Then answer questions 1 5. Lightning Strikes No one knows exactly where lightning will strike. But one thing is certain: every year a number of people get struck by lightning. Some are killed, while others survive with injuries to various parts of their bodies. For one lightning survivor, the affected area was his brain. His story begins on a stormy night. Nick s wife was away on a business trip, and he was home alone sleeping. In the middle of the night, Nick was awakened by a violent thunderstorm. The house did not have lightning protection. He got out of bed and decided to turn off the cooling system. As he reached for the switch, lightning struck the cooler on the roof. The current traveled through the house s electrical system and entered Nick s hand through the switch he was touching. What happened next is unclear. Most likely, the current reached Nick s brain, which sent his body into a spasm. The spasm threw him against a wall that had a metal strip on one corner. The current then exited Nick s body through his head when it hit the metal strip. A small burn scar on his head shows where the current escaped. Nick awoke about five minutes later. He was lying facedown on the floor, ten feet from the switch. That s how far the electrical jolt had thrown him! His nose was broken, and he had numerous scrapes and bruises. However, other than that, Nick felt okay. There didn t seem to be any reason to call 911, so he went back to bed.

rskills Test 7b, page 3 When Nick woke up the next morning, he felt woozy and had difficulty walking. He didn t know what day it was and could not remember how to make his morning coffee. Then, as Nick was getting dressed, he had a seizure. He fell to the floor and lay there unconscious for a while. When he awoke he felt fairly normal, so he finished dressing and resumed his day. Later that morning, Nick s wife returned home. She was alarmed when Nick told her what happened, and she wanted to take him to the hospital. But Nick insisted that he was perfectly fine and refused to go. Over the next few weeks, however, Nick noticed that his mind didn t seem to be working normally. It was almost as if the lightning had scrambled the circuitry in his brain. The main problem was his short-term memory the ability to remember recent events. Nick could easily recall events from the past. He could name the president of the United States. He could also recite his phone number and the birthdays of everyone in his family. But when he went to the kitchen to get something to eat, he couldn t remember what he was doing there. He just stood with a blank look on his face. A similar experience occurred when Nick got into his car to run some errands one day. He drove a few blocks from his house, only to forget where he was going and why he was in the car. Confused, he turned the car around and went back home. Nick became convinced that something was seriously wrong. He started carrying a small note pad and pencil to write notes to himself. Whenever he had something to do, even a task as simple as going to the post office, he would jot it down. As he completed each task, he would cross it off his list. The lightning incident also had a strange effect on Nick s dreams. Nick had always been a heavy sleeper, and before the lightning strike he rarely

rskills Test 7b, page 4 remembered his dreams. But now, sleeping was like watching an action-packed movie. Nick had bizarre dreams every night, and each dream seemed to last from the time he went to sleep until the moment he woke up. In the mornings, he was exhausted. He felt as if he was actually living his dreams. During the daytime, Nick had memory flashbacks. Suddenly, he would recall in great detail an event that had happened years ago. These flashbacks were more than just visual images. They included sounds, smells, and tastes. They were so vivid that he felt like he was reliving the past. After a few weeks, Nick realized that it was time to seek medical help. He made an appointment with a neurologist, a doctor who specializes in the brain and nervous system. The neurologist did some tests and then explained what was going on. The lightning had, in fact, affected Nick s brain, but he was lucky. The effects were temporary and would probably clear up in a year or two. The doctor prescribed some medication, and Nick s symptoms eventually disappeared completely.

rskills Test 7b, page 5 1. When the lightning exited Nick s body, it broke his nose. damaged the wall. burned both of his hands. caused a small burn scar.

rskills Test 7b, page 6 2. When Nick became convinced that something was seriously wrong, he started writing notes to himself. went to the post office. forgot where he was going. became confused. 3. How did the lightning strike affect Nick s dreams? He couldn t remember his dreams. He had many strange dreams. He didn t dream at all. He dreamed about being struck by lightning. 4. What is the best summary of Nick s experience with lightning? Nick woke up during a storm when his wife was away. He got up to turn off the cooling system. Nick got hit by lightning while touching a switch. The lightning affected his short-term memory and his sleep habits, but the symptoms eventually disappeared. Nick remembered birthdays and the name of the president, but he could not remember what he was doing in the kitchen or why he was driving the car. Nick got struck by lightning one night in his house and was knocked unconscious. When he woke up, he felt fine, but a few weeks later he realized he had a serious problem.

rskills Test 7b, page 7 5. What is the best summary of information in the diagram? A residential lightning protection system has lightning rods, copper cables, and grounding rods or plates. This house has four lightning rods, a chimney, nine windows, and a front door. Most buildings in the United States have lightning rods attached to their their roofs and chimneys. A house that does not have lightning protection can be struck and damaged by lightning.

rskills Test 7b, page 8 Read the following biographical text. Then answer questions Marlee Matlin Imagine acting in a silent theater with no music and no applause. Imagine not being able to hear your own voice. Marlee Matlin doesn t have to imagine. When she won the Academy Award in 1986 for her performance in the movie Children of a Lesser God, she gave her acceptance speech in sign language. She didn t hear the cheers of the audience that night. Marlee Matlin has never heard the applause of an audience in her life. Marlee Matlin is deaf. However, she has never let her deafness stand in the way of her acting. And her impairment never stopped anyone from recognizing her ability very early in her life. Matlin was just six years old when she joined a performing arts center for the deaf and hard of hearing in Chicago. By the age of seven she was playing Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. From the beginning, Marlee Matlin was a star. Marlee Matlin was not born deaf. When she was 18 months old, she got a case of German measles, which was fairly common at the time among children between the ages of six months and two years. It starts with a fever and ends with a rash. The fever can be high, and the rash can be very uncomfortable. But it s usually over within a few days and has no lasting effects. In Matlin s case, it was more serious. The illness left her totally deaf in her right ear, and 80 percent deaf in her left ear. In medical terms, Marlee Matlin is profoundly deaf. Her world has been silent for as long as she can remember. And for almost as long as she can remember, Matlin has been acting. After children s theater in Chicago, she acted all through her high school years in her

rskills Test 7b, page 9 hometown of Morton Grove, Illinois. She studied criminal justice at Harper College in Illinois, but her real love was always the stage. However talented she was, life for a deaf actress was never going to be easy. People tended to notice her deafness instead of her talent. Matlin has said, At some point we have to stop and say, There s Marlee, not, There s the deaf actress. But how do you reach that point? It began to happen with an inspiring story. Children of a Lesser God was originally a stage play. Written by Mark Medoff, it was a huge hit on Broadway in It could have been written for Marlee Matlin. The play is a romantic drama set in a school for the deaf. It is about the relationship between a teacher (who can hear) and a deaf student. It is also a drama about a young woman coming to terms with her impairment and facing the challenges of the world outside her school. The play is what s called a coming-of-age drama. Matlin played the part in Chicago in Her performance was so powerful that word of it reached Hollywood, where the play was being turned into a movie. The producers were searching for an actress to play the part of the deaf student. Many well-known actresses had tried out for the part, but none had been quite right. The call went out to Chicago. The unknown 20-year-old auditioned for the role of a lifetime. The following year, she became the youngest actress ever to receive an Academy Award as Best Actress. Marlee Matlin had come of age. Since then, Matlin has become a much-loved performer in movies and on TV. She has appeared in many TV dramas and comedies, including The West Wing, Seinfeld, and CSI: New York. She has even appeared in Dancing with the Stars.

rskills Test 7b, page 10 Matlin has also worked tirelessly for people with hearing problems. Her achievements are an encouragement to young people. As she says, The handicap of deafness is not in the ear; it is in the mind. In 1995, she went to Washington, D. C., to campaign for closed captioning for TV. This is a system that provides written words on the screen for viewers who can t hear them. In 1996, a law was passed that required TV stations to make closed captioning available to viewers who need it. It was a great victory for the deaf and for Marlee Matlin. Marlee Matlin s world is silent. However, she is surrounded by sound: applause, laughter, words, and music. As she says, Silence is the last thing the world will ever hear from me. 6. Marlee Matlin s deafness resulted from an automobile accident. birth defects. a childhood illness. severe brain damage. 7. How did the producers of of a Lesser God Marlee Matlin? Children find They saw her perform in The Wizard of Oz. They heard about her stage performance in Chicago. They held auditions for the role and she showed up. She told them she was a famous actress.

rskills Test 7b, page Why is closed captioning important to deaf people? It lets them read the words spoken in TV programs. Closed captioning was not available to most people. A law was passed in 1996 that required closed captioning. It is a great victory for Marlee Matlin. 9. A summary of this text should include Matlin s study of criminal justice. the fact that Matlin is not 100 percent deaf in both ears. a list of each of her TV appearances. a description of her work on behalf of the deaf. 10. Which is the best summary of Mary Matlin s career? Mary Matlin has used her deafness as an example to other deaf people who want to become actors. Deafness has never been a problem for Mary Matlin, who has become famous playing characters who are not deaf. Despite her deafness, Mary Matlin has become a famous actress who works to improve the lives of the deaf. Marlee Matlin s Academy Award in 1986, was a lifelong achievement she shared with all deaf people.
