1 Main Idea and Details Sort Students are given 4 different main ideas and 12 details. Students must match up the details to the correct main idea. Print the main ideas (page 25) in one color and the details (pages 26 27) in a different color to help students distinguish between the two. A recording sheet is provided as a way to assess student work. 2 Main Idea and Details Sort In the picture below, the orange cards are the main ideas and the green cards are the supporting details. 3 Main Idea Cards 1. Print out the main idea cards (this page) in one color and the detail cards (Pages 26-27) in a different color. 2. Cut out each of the main idea and detail cards. 3. OPTIONAL: Laminate for durability 4. OPTIONAL: Make copies of the recording sheet for each student (Page 28). 5. Place all of the materials in a center. 4 Detail Cards Your outer ear is called the pinna, and its job is to gather sounds and send them to the middle ear. Shake water out of your ears after swimming so that you don t get swimmer s ear. The middle ear s job is to take sound waves that enter through the outer ear and deliver them as vibrations to the inner ear. Make sure to put sunscreen on your ears if you are going to be out in the sun so that your ears don t get sunburned. The inner ear creates signals that it sends to the brain, and then the brain helps you understand what you are hearing. Keep the outside of your ears clean by washing them with soap and water.

5 Detail Cards If you are around loud sounds over a long period of time, it could cause permanent hearing loss. Sign language is a system of gestures and signs that helps people communicate with their hands. Loud sounds damage the tiny hair cells in your inner ear that help you hear. Some deaf people can understand what others are saying by watching their lip movements closely. Tinnitus (a ringing in your ear) can happen temporarily when you are around loud sounds. A telecommunication device called a TDD can be used to type out conversations.
