1 Topic: Bone Grafts and Dental Implants - How Long Should We Wait? Speaker s Name: Dr Dominic Leung, Dr Chan Siew Luen, Dr Ang Chee Wan Synopsis: When the concept of osseointegration was first introduced in the 1980s, it was understood to be a time based process of living bone integration intimate to the surfaces of the titanium implant. The recommended healing period before loading was six months for the lower and nine months for the upper jaws from stage I surgery on a healed ridge site. With improvement of implant surfaces and design, surgical aids and skills as well as better understanding of the body healing mechanism, the loading time has been reduced to just weeks or even immediate, provided there is good to excellent primary stability of the implant. However, the same healing period needs to be adjusted accordingly when bone grafts are involved to different extents. There are various factors ranging from the type of graft, the volume and support, the site characteristics, shielding effects etc. that could determine how much waiting time would be needed and these will be discussed at the panel presentation. There will be half an hour of Q&A for further discussions. 2 Dr. Dominic Leung graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1975, where he was awarded the University Bronze Medal in After working as a dental officer with the Ministry of Health, he joined Drs Tay and Partners Dental Surgeons as an associate, and became a senior partner until He obtained his postgraduate qualifications from the Royal Colleges of London and Edinburgh. In 2012, he was awarded the Public Service Star (BBM) by the government for his contribution to Singapore. DR DOMINIC LEUNG Active in the dental community, Dr Leung is former President of the Guild of Dental Graduates, Singapore, former Chairman, Medical Alumni Association and former President of Prosthodontic Society, Singapore. In the field of implant dentistry, he is a former Chairman and President of the Asian Oral Implant Academy, Vice President of the Hong Kong Society of Oral Implantology, Fellow, Diplomate & Ambassador with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Believing in imparting his knowledge to fellow dentists, Dr. Leung serves as an adjunct senior lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and as course supervisor of the NUS Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology and the J W University of Frankfurt Master in Oral Implantology programs. He is also a visiting lecturer at several dental schools in Thailand and the Philippines. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Asian Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry, a reviewer of the Hong Kong Dental Journal and is on the editorial board of the Quintessence International (Asia) Journal. Dr. Leung s special interests lie in aesthetic dentistry, oral implantology and oral surgery.

5 Dr Ang Chee Wan graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery degree from the National University of Singapore. He received specialist training in periodontology and graduated with a Master of Dental Surgery degree. In the same year, he obtained his fellowship in periodontology from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (United Kingdom). DR ANG CHEE WAN Dr Ang is an accredited Specialist in Periodontology registered with the Singapore Dental Council. He is a visiting specialist at the Singapore Armed Forces and the National University Hospital. He also teaches the undergraduate and postgraduate students in the National University of Singapore. Dr Ang lectures overseas frequently in numerous countries including Switzerland, China, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam. He was invited by Asian Academy of Prosthodontics to speak in Shanghai, China and by Asian Academy of Aesthetic Dentistry to speak in Sapporo, Japan. Dr Ang was also invited to teach in postgraduate programs in the University of Washington, USA and the University of California Los Angeles, USA. Dr Ang is an active member in several professional organizations, including the Society of Periodontology (Singapore), the Aesthetic Dentistry Society of Singapore and the International Team for Implantology (ITI). As a periodontist, Dr Ang provides a comprehensive range of periodontal therapy. These include gum treatment, bone and gum grafting procedures, aesthetic gum surgery and a full range of dental implant procedures. He has special interests in implant dentistry, periodontal plastic surgery, minimally invasive surgeries and bone regenerative procedures.
