2 LET S TALK ABOUT INFECTION CONTROL AND OSHA A Half Day CE Seminar 4 Continuing Education Credits Presented by Dr. John Molinari Friday, June 17, 2016 Thousand Oaks Golf Club This seminar will provide an update on occupational bloodborne and respiratory infection risks for dental healthcare professionals, as well as a practical discussion of current infection prevention regulations and recommendations for dentistry. The most recent CDC recommendations concerning bloodborne pathogens and infection control will be presented, along with updates on OSHA regulations as they pertain to dental settings. Hand hygiene, vaccinations and other preventive measures (i.e., personal protective equipment, instrument reprocessing, disinfections and dental water asepsis) are frameworks of this presentation. Infectious disease challenges and prevention strategies will be used to reinforce the application of standard precautions during patient treatment. The most recent evidence-based information is also discussed to address certain issues where perceptions and misuse of infection control procedures and products are in conflict with scientific and clinical knowledge. Seminar Objectives At the conclusion of this presentation, participants should be able to: Understand the most recent updates for provincial and CDC infection control recommendations. Understand the rationale for effective hand hygiene procedures as fundamental components of an infection control program. Describe the challenges bloodborne and respiratory infections present to healthcare workers. Comprehend the most current vaccination recommendations for dental personnel. Describe recent technology advances and protocols for instrument processing and sterilization. Comprehend efficient and effective approaches to monitor sterilization. Describe the use of disposables and disinfectants used in environmental surface asepsis. Describe factors which can lead to dental until waterline (DUWL) contamination. Comprehend practical strategies which may minimize forms of DUWL contamination. Describe the capabilities and roles for evacuation system cleaners. ABOUT THE PRESENTER Dr. John Molinari received a B.A. in Biology from St. Vincent College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.

3 ABOUT THE PRESENTER Dr. John Molinari received a B.A. in Biology from St. Vincent College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He was a full- time faculty member at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry for 32 years, where he served as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Sciences. He has published over 300 scientific articles, text chapters, and abstracts in the areas of microbiology and immunology, and lectures nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and infection control. He is also co- author of Cottone s Practical Infection Control in Dentistry. Dr. Molinari has published over 250 scientific articles, text chapters and abstracts in the areas of Microbiology and Immunology, is a co-author of the text Practical Infection Control in Dentistry, and has lectured nationally and internationally on topics dealing with infectious diseases and dental asepsis. Dr. Molinari serves as the Director of Infection Control at The Dental Advisor in Ann Arbor, MI and as a consultant for the CDC, ADA Council on Scientific Affairs, Council on Dental Practice, and hospitals in the Detroit area. He was Project Coordinator for the governmental Health Resources and Services Administration Task Force on AIDS and Dental Education, and Chairman of the American Association of Dental School s Curriculum Advisory Committee on Bloodborne Infectious Diseases. Dr. Molinari was also appointed and served as Chairman of the State of Michigan Governor s Risk Reduction and AIDS Policy Commission. He was infection control section editor for The Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry and a member of the Editorial Board for The Journal of the American Dental Association.
