CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will give the beginning dental assisting student a foundational knowledge of basic terminology, structures of the oral cavity, tooth morphology, tissues of the teeth, charting, and oral health care. The student will be oriented to the profession of dentistry in terms of governing bodies, professional organizations, ethics and jurisprudence. Two and a half hours lecture per week. CLASS SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will give the beginning dental assisting student a foundational knowledge of basic terminology, structures of the oral cavity, tooth morphology, tissues of the teeth, charting, and oral health care. The student will be oriented to the profession of dentistry in terms of governing bodies, professional organizations, ethics and jurisprudence. COURSE OBJECTIVES

2 DENT 100 Dental Assisting Basics Page 2 Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate knowledge of the teeth and oral cavity and their related structures 2. demonstrate ability to chart a patient s mouth using accepted symbols 3. demonstrate knowledge of the dental profession, the dental health care team, ethics and jurisprudence 4. demonstrate knowledge of communication skills as they relate to patient management 5. demonstrate knowledge in plaque, its effects on the oral cavity and how to effectively remove it 6. demonstrate knowledge in basic computer skills REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS Modern Dental Assisting, Torres/Ehrlich, 2002 Course Lecture Guide Red/blue pencil The reading for this course is: PRIMARILY COLLEGE LEVEL REQUIRED ASSIGNMENTS OUTSIDE OF CLASS Over an 18 week presentation of the course three hours per week are required for each unit of credit. Two hours of independent work done out of class are required for each hour of lecture. If "essay" is not checked, it must be explained why essays are an inappropriate basis for at least part of the grade in the course. ESSAY OR SUBSTANTIAL WRITING ASSIGNMENT Includes not only "blue book" examinations but any written assignment of sufficient length and complexity to require students to select and organize ideas as well as to explain them.
