Report of the Council on Continuing Education Michael A. Ignelzi, Jr., Chair Jade A. Miller, Board Liaison Kristin Olson and Scott Dalhouse, Staff Liaisons District Representative members: David A. Tesini (I) Maxim Sulla (II) Brian A. Beitel (III) James E. Jones (IV) Bruce Weiner (V) David Mast (VI) Consultants and Ex-Officio members: Chris Baker, Consultant Catharine A. Enright, Consultant Mario E. Ramos, Consultant Charge 1. Status of Charge 1: In Progress Develop and plan new and unique continuing education courses aligned with the Strategic Plan and the needs and desires of the membership. Propose at least annually to the Board of Trustees such courses. Monitor member and allied dental professional needs and desires regarding AAPD continuing education, on which a report is to be presented to the Board of Trustees, along with the Council s recommendations for specific course offerings, at the January 2010 Winter meeting of the Board of Trustees. Background and Intent: This is a standing charge to the Council, based on future membership needs assessment surveys. It is the Academy s desire to regularly offer continuing education opportunities of unique content. This is a membership benefit as well as a potential source of non-dues revenue. The Council on Continuing will develop questions to be utilized in electronic surveys and other sources to measure the needs and desires of our members. Progress Report for Charge 1 A new approach was been taken with the practice management course that was presented in March 2010 (see response to Charge 5). A new course, related to medical emergencies, is being developed (see response to Charge 7). To respond to member s needs and desires, the Council thoroughly reviews course evaluations and suggestions by members for new course topics. The Council will carefully consider the results of the recently completed membership survey. Charge 2. Status of Charge 2: In Progress Remain sensitive to developing and identifying content in AAPD Continuing Education courses suitable for the general dental practitioner. Make recommendations to the Board and Headquarters Office staff for marketing these courses to the Affiliate membership and to other general dentists. If appropriate, recommend to the Board of Trustees proposals for courses dedicated solely to the general practitioner.
Background and Intent: This is a standing charge to the Council. In , the Council investigated the feasibility and proposed to the Board of Trustees a CE course for general dentists. The Council will continually monitor, develop, and present courses suitable for general practitioners. Progress Report for Charge 2 Many of the current and proposed courses are appropriate for the general dental practitioner. We have explored the possibility of advertising in the ADA News and have determined this option to be cost prohibitive. Partnering with respected national organizations, like the Academy of General Dentistry, to publicize our courses remains the most appropriate method to market our courses to the general dental practitioner. Charge 3. Status of Charge 3: In Progress Monitor planning activities as requested to assist the symposium director in the development and execution of the 2009 Symposium on Early Childhood Caries. Background and Intent: This charge is a duty of the CCE as outlined in the AAPD Administrative Policy and Procedure Manual. The Academy recognizes its role as the leading authority in the field of early childhood caries. The Academy is committed to providing our members with the best evidence-based knowledge on pediatric dental topics. This symposium is intended be a building block for a future national consensus conference on early childhood caries. The Council on Continuing Education shall oversee the continuing education aspects of this symposium. Progress Report for Charge 3 Dr. Joel Berg served as Symposium Director. The Symposium was held in Chicago on October 23 and 24, Charge 4. Status of Charge 4: In Progress Based on the AAPD Strategic Plan, provide guidance and consultation on continuing education matters and programs to the Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Background and Intent: This is a standing charge to the Council. The Board of Trustees has charged the CCE with the ongoing responsibility of coordinating various educational activities and opportunities on pediatric oral health topics to our pediatrician colleagues through the Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health, American Academy of Pediatrics. The intent of this charge is to provide a mechanism to best utilize the CE talents and other resources of the AAPD to produce programs of importance and interest to members of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Progress Report for Charge 4 The Council stands ready to provide guidance and consultation regarding continuing education matters to the Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health of American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Charge 5. Status of Charge 5: In Progress Plan and conduct at two year intervals a Contemporary Practice Management/Evolving Technologies course. Emphasize membership participation on the faculty of these courses.
Submit annually a report for the approval of the Board on plans for upcoming courses. Make recommendations for modification of the two-year cycle as needed. Background and Intent: The Council on Continuing Education has presented a series of successful Contemporary Practice Management courses in the past. The next course will be presented in March Progress Report for Charge 5 An objective review of the attendance and financials regarding recent AAPD practice management courses strongly suggested that a new direction was needed for this offering. Particularly disturbing was the 2006 course that resulted in a loss of $38,628. In close cooperation with Academy Leadership and Staff, a new course entitled: Getting the Most from Your Practice: Using Technology and Building Exceptional People Skills was developed and held in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on March 5 and 6, Charge 6. Status of Charge 6: In Progress Continually review and update a core curriculum for a comprehensive pediatric dentistry review course for general dentists. Act at the direction of the Board regarding presentation of the course. Course content will include behavior management and the AAPD policy and guidelines. Background and Intent: There is a demand for general dentists to obtain evidence-based knowledge of pediatric dentistry. As more general dentists treat children, and increased knowledge of behavior management is needed, it is necessary for the Academy to sponsor CE for the general dentist. Behavior management should be integrated within the comprehensive review course to educate general dentists about our policies and guidelines as they pertain to behavior management, and best practices on behavior management. Progress Report for Charge 6 A continuing education course titled Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry for the General Practitioner, was delivered in Las Vegas April 3 5, The AAPD President at the time, Beverly Largent, and the AGD President at the time, Paula Jones, delivered opening remarks at this course. Four AAPD members, Chris Baker, Dennis McTigue, William Waggoner and Michael Ignelzi, served as course faculty and approximately 180 general dentists attended this course. Another course has recently been developed for general dentists (see response to Charge 8). Charge 7. Status of Charge 7: Ongoing Develop a core curriculum for a comprehensive course on medical emergencies in the dental office. Plan and conduct this course at the direction of the Board, at two year intervals, alternating with a Pediatric Medicine Update course. Report to the Board of Trustees at the 2009 Ad Interim meeting. Act at the direction of the Board regarding planning and implementation for either course. Background and Intent: There is a need for our members and their staff to obtain evidence-based knowledge in responding to medical emergencies in the dental office. Development of the course will include representatives from the Sedation Committee and the AAP Section on Pediatric Dentistry and Oral Health. Faculty should include non-dental and dental professionals who deal with medical emergencies routinely. Content should include a PALS component.
Progress Report for Charge 7 At the 2009 Annual Session, the Council on Continuing Education discussed this charge at great length and came to the realization that an Expert Consultant was needed to develop this course. During the conference call that followed the annual session involving President Berlocher, Board of Trustee Liaison Miller, CEO Rutkauskas, Staff Liaison Dalhouse and Council Chair Ignelzi, Dr. Rutkauskas enthusiastically agreed to identify suitable course faculty. Ideal course faculty would include Emergency Room Physicians, affiliated with an academic medical center, who are knowledgeable, credible and entertaining. Since then, Dr. Rutkauskas has identified core faculty and he is working with them to develop course content. Charge 8. Status of Charge 8: In Progress Develop a one day continuing education course for the Academy of General Dentistry s Annual Meeting. Background and Intent: It is important for the AAPD to engage general dentists to provide dental care for children. This care should meet the guidelines for care set by the AAPD. Progress Report for Charge 8 A new course, titled Hot Topics in Pediatric Dentistry, has been developed for the 2010 Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) annual session. As background, the Head Start Dental Home Initiative granted the AGD $10K so that they would offer a full day course related to pediatric dentistry at their 2010 annual session that will be held in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jan Silverman, AAPD Staff Member and Head Start Dental Home Initiative Project Manager, was the driving force behind this grant award. The AAPD Council on Continuing Education was then asked to develop content and select speakers for this course. The Council identified four content areas (trauma, behavior management, restorative materials and pulp therapy) and selected Drs. N. Sue Seale and Constance Killian as speakers. Dr. James Crall will also present a brief update about the Head Start Dental Home Initiative. Charge 9. Status of Charge 9: Completed Develop a list of topics which could be considered for online continuing education courses. Present these topics at the 2009 Ad Interim Board meeting. Background and Intent: Currently, a majority of the pediatric dental residents receive a portion of their training electronically. Younger dentists communicate electronically for a majority of their professional and non-professional encounters. The Academy needs to be prepared to engage this group professionally through electronic continuing education. Progress Report for Charge 9 A list of topics which could be considered for online continuing education has been developed. A proposal to pilot 3 online continuing education courses will be considered by the AAPD Leadership in May Charge 10. Status of Charge 10: Ongoing Develop content and select speaker(s) for a one-day course related to pediatric dentistry to be presented at the Greater New York Dental Meeting in 2009.
Background and Intent: A course related to pediatric dentistry, presented at tone of the most widely attended dental meetings in the United States, would promote our policies and guidelines and would enhance our image as the recognized authority in pediatric oral health. Progress Report for Charge 10 Grow your Practice with Perinatal and Infant Oral Health was presented at the 2009 Greater New York Dental Meeting. Speakers included Drs. David Curtis, Rocio Quinonez and Gerald Quirk. Drs. Curtis and Quinonez are pediatric dentists who have a proven track record as knowledgeable, credible and entertaining speakers related to infant oral health. Dr. Quirk is Professor and Chair of the SUNY Stony Brook Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology who helped to develop the NY State Department of Health guidelines on dental care for pregnant women. The decision to present a course related to perinatal and infant oral health was a strategic decision to improve the chances that the 5 year, $1,000,000, grant awarded to the AAPD by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau would be renewed. One of the main objectives of the AAPD s current 5 year project award is to disseminate knowledge about perinatal and infant oral health to dental professionals. Presenting an AAPD-sponsored course at one of the largest dental meetings in the United States was a wonderful opportunity to satisfy this objective. The timing of this course could not have been more perfect applications to renew the grant for another 5-year cycle will likely be due sometime in By all accounts, the course was very successful; this success enhances the AAPD s reputation as the recognized voice regarding children s oral health.
