3 Continuing Professional Development The General Dental Council introduced CPD to all Dental Care Professionals in August All Dental Care Professionals have a duty to keep both their knowledge and skills up to date, ensuring patients receive the best possible care and treatment. You need to plan, complete and record your CPD as of August Your CPD is to be completed in a five year cycle, according to the date when you registered. All DCPs must currently (January 2014) complete 150 hours of CPD in the 5 year cycle; 50 hours of that must be verifiable and the other 100 hours can be non-verifiable (ie general). The GDC recommends that you under take 30 hours per year. When you registered On or after 1 August 2010 Your next CPD cycle start date The next 1 August after you first registered Between 1 August August 2010 and 31 July 2010 Between 1 August August 2009 and 31 July 2009 On or before 31 July August 2008 Verifiable CPD must met the GDC criteria the activity organisers must provide documentary evidence of your participation, the activity and the time involved; have provided concise aims, objectives and outcomes; and have given participants an opportunity to provide feedback. The recommended (ie core ) subjects for verifiable CPD are Medical Emergencies (10 hours in a 5 year cycle); Disinfection and Decontamination (5 hours in a 5 year cycle); Radiography and Radiation Protection (5 hours in a 5 year cycle). Those working in the clinical environment providing patient care should also include legal and ethical issues and complaint handling. Tutors must undertake educational CPD in addition to the above requirements. Non-verifiable (general) CPD should also be included in your professional development and could include attending practice meetings, reading dental journals such as the British Dental Nurses Journal, background research and private study. You must keep a personal record of your CPD hours, both verifiable and non-verifiable, and the documentary evidence of verifiable activity on a yearly basis. The GDC may carry out random checks!
