1 DIRECTORY OF SCHOOL-BASED ORAL HEALTH SERVICES WEST VIRGINIA WEST VIRGINIA SCHOOL HEALTH TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE AND EVALUATION CENTER ROBERT C BYRD CENTER FOR RURAL HEALTH MARSHALL UNIVERSITY
2 INTRODUCTION As part of West Virginia s School Oral Health Initiative, the Marshall School Health Technical Assistance Center conducted an on-line survey of county school systems during the spring and summer of The survey was designed by the Marshall staff with input from the Office of Healthy Schools, West Virginia Department of Education. The Office of Healthy Schools sent the invitation to participate in the survey to the designated school nurse coordinator or contact in each county. Several follow-up requests and reminders were sent during the summer and into the fall of The purposes of the survey were: 1. To measure progress in expansion of school-based oral health services in each county; 2. To identify issues, needs and barriers to implementing school-based oral health services; and 3. To develop a county-level directory describing current school-based oral health services. The final report of the entire survey is available at This directory provides basic information about each county s school-based oral health services in the school year. Thirty-nine of the 55 county school districts responded to the survey. Of those, 36 gave approval to have their information published in this directory. We would like to thank the Benedum Foundation for its support of this and other oral health initiatives in West Virginia. We also thank all of those who took time to complete the survey. We hope this information will provide useful information and a baseline for measuring West Virginia s progress in improving the oral health of children and teens. Sincerely, West Virginia School Health Technical Assistance and Evaluation Center Robert C. Byrd Center for Rural Health Marshall University 1600 Medical Center Drive, Suite 1400 Huntington, West Virginia For information about or corrections to this directory, contact Linda Anderson at landerson@marshall.edu or Bobbi Jo Muto at or bjmuto.steele@marshall.edu
