2 Purpose of Orientation Increase awareness of WITC s Dental Assistant Program. Promote an understanding of the commitment needed to successfully complete the program. Share information/expectations to provide a smooth start to the program. Explain the role of the learner in the DA program.

4 A little about me. I have been a Dental Assistant since I began my career as an Instructor in 2005 and with WITC since April I like this profession for a number of reasons Flexibility, workday, variety (family practice, specialty, front desk/business office, Insurance Co, etc.), clean working conditions.
5 A little about Megen Megen began her career as a Dental Assistant and attended Dental Hygiene school. She has an MS in Organizational Leadership A little more about Megen

DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAM ENTRY CHECKLIST o Attend Orientation o CPR- AMERICAN HEALTH CARE PROVIDER course- two year renewal o Health Card- medical & dental examinations satisfactorily completed; with ALL forms turned in. Hepatitis B immunization TB Skin Test The clerk will then issue a yellow card, for you to keep, with dates of immunizations. We will make a copy of these cards for program records. o Purchase Uniforms o Job shadow experience o Permission form signed I understand that all items on this checklist must be completed prior to program entry. 9 ORIENTATION Attend Orientation
10 CPR It is the student s responsibility to obtain/maintain current CPR certification at the start of core courses. Current certification must be maintained throughout the entire DA program. Your CPR certification must be good through the end of the program! Acceptable CPR classes are listed on the DA webpage.
11 CPR Continued. CPR must include infant, child, adult, and AED as well as a hands-on exam. *Online CPR certification is NOT accepted by WITC DA program. A CPR class will be available for all DA students on: *A complete list of classes are available on the WITC website
12 Student ID Badges Student Clinical Name Badge In order to clearly identify students at a clinical site, students must wear a WITC name badge Students should go to the LRC to have their picture taken and pick up their Clinical Name Badges Students are to wear a lab coat, scrub top, or uniform top for the picture in order to maintain a professional image
13 PROGRAM ADMISSION Medical/Dental Exams/Immunizations/TB test (DO NOT have radiographs taken) The Permission slip what is it and why do I need it???
14 BACKGROUND CHECKS All Background checks must be completed before the beginning of class in the fall. (see complete list online)

16 DENTAL OFFICE VISIT FORM, EXAMPLE Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Dental Office Visitation Record For Dental Assistant Program Return completed form no later than Monday, August 8, 2011 to: Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College Attn: Jennifer Heutmaker-Holden, Health Education Center 1900 College Dr Rice Lake, WI As a new Dental Assistant student, you must spend 4-8 hours in a dental office of your choice. You should be able to observe at least one Dental Hygienist, one Dental Assistant, and one Dentist. Business casual clothing should be worn (no jeans). If you presently work in a dental office, you may interview the office staff that you work with or visit a different office. This form must be completed prior to starting the program. 21 Professional Personal Appearance Please remember that you are entering the profession of Dental Assisting as such we ask that you are mindful of things such as: Hair (See next slide) Nails Keep it conservative (color/cut) Bangs back and contained No disgust-a-buns NO ARTIFICIAL NAILS ALLOWED Must be short and well manicured No nail polish Tattoos ALL VISIBLE TATOOS MUST BE COVERED! Must be covered when you are at clinical sites or in Lab. Piercings NO visible body piercings (including oral piercings) are allowed in Labs or clinical *Exception: one small earring (no bigger an 1 ) in each earlobe. *See handbook for acceptable ear piercings. Jewelry Jewelry must be kept to a minimum; a watch and a wedding band are acceptable. Wedding rings with prongs are not acceptable.
