1 CGTC DHYG Program Mission, Goals, Objectives, and Student Learning Objectives for CGTC Mission Statement The Mission of Central Georgia Technical College, a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, is to provide traditional and distance learning educational programs and services. Through credit instruction, adult education, and customized business and industry workforce training, the College contributes to economic and workforce development within its eleven-county service area and throughout the State of Georgia. CGTC Dental Hygiene Program Mission Statement To provide the Dental Hygiene student with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to become a registered Dental Hygienist and secure employment in the competitive and demanding field of dental hygiene. This Department seeks to maintain a strong working relationship with area dentists and their office staff to assure that the curriculum, training equipment, and techniques used in the Program mirror local needs. CGTC Dental Hygiene Department Institutional Goals The Dental Hygiene program of study encourages each Dental Hygiene program student to benefit and contribute as a partner in the economic development and stability of Georgia. The Dental Hygiene program is an occupational program that provides the knowledge and skills to prepare participants for the dental hygiene profession. Program graduates are trained in the fundamentals of dental hygiene and are well prepared for licensure and therefore employment and subsequent upward mobility in the field of dental hygiene. CGTC Dental Hygiene Program Goals 1. Provide current instructional material, educational facilities, and equipment (in accordance with available funding) which teach knowledge and skills appropriate to industry needs. 2. Provide academic instruction which supports effective learning within the program and which enhances job performance through computer literacy to include skills needed to properly use , create an effective PowerPoint presentation, complete assignments in the online learning management system, use dental software to input patients, input and mount radiographs, and monitor patient appointments, use Microsoft Word to prepare a resume, effectively use the internet to research medications, and successfully complete homework assignments on assigned websites. 3. Provide employability skills, which foster work attitudes and work habits that will enable graduates of the program to perform as responsible, professional employees. 4. Provide education that fosters ethical decisions in all endeavors. 5. Advance the profession through service activities and affiliations with professional organizations. 6. Enhance the workforce in Georgia by graduating competent dental hygienists. 7. Supplement the technical and dental hygiene knowledge of full time instructors to provide dental hygiene students with current information for the dental
2 hygiene profession. CGTC Dental Hygiene Program Objectives 1. To purchase equipment to update the dental hygiene clinic to industry standards to include: Macon Campus: Repair computers at each of the 18 dental units and 2 digital radiographic areas Eighteen (18) typodonts for DHYG 1050 and DHYG 1111 so students do not have to purchase their own typodonts each year. All-in-one Optiplex computers at each of the 18 dental units and 2 radiographic areas Dentrix/Dexis software placed on the twenty (20) All-in-one Optiplex computers Two (2) Midmark M11 Autoclaves Warner Robins Campus: To purchase equipment to update the dental hygiene clinic to industry standards to include: All-in-one Optiplex computers at each of the 12 dental units and 3 radiographic areas Schick digital imaging system at 3 dental units Digital panorex machine Cavitron JET Plus Ultrasonic Scaler/Air Polishing systems at each of the 12 dental units. Midmark M11 Autoclave Dentrix/Dexis upgrade 2. Have 100% of students in DHYG 1010 effectively open and send 3 s during the course. 3. Have 80% of students in DHYG 2080 score at least a 75 on the required PowerPoint presentation assignment. 4. Have 100% of students in DHYG 1050 complete the Ethics pretest and students in DHYG 2130 successfully complete the Ethics post-test assignment in Blackboard. 5. Have 90% of students in DHYG 2140 use dental software to complete the process of inputting patients, inputting and mounting radiographs, and monitoring patient appointments during the course. 6. Have 80% of students in DHYG 2130 score at least a 75 on the Resume assignment. 7. Have 100% of students in DHYG 2020 use the internet to research patient medications in the course. 8. Have 80% of students in DHYG 2110 score at least a 75 on the personal Dietary Analysis assignment using an online website such as Myfitnesspal.com. 9. Have 90% of Clinic Lab Professionalism/Work Ethics grades will be 90% or higher in clinic lab courses in DHYG 1050, DHYG 1111, DHYG 2020, DHYG 2090 and DHYG Have 90% of Patient Questionnaires will indicate students displayed professionalism (Positive responses for question 4: "The student who treated me had a professional appearance (clean uniform, neat and well-groomed)." 11. Have 90% of Patient Questionnaires will indicate students displayed professionalism (Positive response for question 5: "The student clearly explained my oral condition and each procedure performed." 12. Have 90% of students enrolled in clinic lab courses (DHYG 2020, DHYG 2090, DHYG 2140) will have 1 or fewer documented critical incidents.
3 13. 90% of students will attain a score of 90% or higher on the Ethics post-test given in DHYG Have 100% of the CGTC dental hygiene students participate in a minimum of 2 community volunteer events and attend a minimum of 2 dental/dental hygiene professional meetings prior to graduation. 15. Have 80% of the CGTC dental hygiene graduates from each campus obtain their dental hygiene license in Georgia. 16. Maintain a program retention rate of at least 80% for full-time first-time DHYG students. 17. Graduate 24 students from the Dental Hygiene programs (graduation rate of 100%). 18. To send one full-time dental hygiene instructor from each campus to the Hinman Dental Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia during March To send 3 full-time dental hygiene instructors to the Dental Hygiene Symposium in Savannah during July Students will be able to provide appropriate patient education. a. 90% of students will score 80% or higher on the Oral Hygiene Education clinical competency (Fall, Spring, Summer Semesters) b. 90% of students will score 80% or higher on the Nutritional Counseling clinical competency (Spring Semester) c. 90% of students will score 80% or higher on the Tobacco Cessation Counseling clinical competency (Spring Semester) d. 90% of Employer Surveys sent to area dentists will indicate CGTC dental hygiene students provide appropriate patient education (Spring Semester following year) e. 90% of Patient Questionnaires will indicate CGTC dental hygiene students provide appropriate patient education (every semester) 21. Students will be able to provide appropriate dental hygiene care based on assessment results. a. 90% of students will score a 50 (out of maximum 60) or higher on the Scale portion of the CRDTS exam (Spring semester) b. 90% of clinic Instrumentation grades will be 80% or higher. (Summer, Fall, Spring semesters) c. 90% of Employer Surveys will indicate that graduates plan and provide appropriate dental hygiene care based on assessment results (Spring semester following graduation)
