1 JDT Feature The DANCE of the DECADE What s Still Hot and What s Not? Ten years. For some, the past decade has gone by with the snap of their fingers. For others, it s been a bit of a long haul. Most can agree though that the products and technology that have been introduced into the industry have been coming at a fast and furious pace that only seems to accelerate. The JDT has always kept a pulse on the latest trends with the annual WOW! product issue and the regular Product Feature column. Just like looking at an old high school yearbook, curiosity prevails to rediscover what things looked like back then and compare to current day. JDT asked technicians to take a look at the products featured back in 2007 and give their thoughts on what s still hot and what s not. 12 Journal of Dental Technology August/September 2017

2 What s Still Hot Aquaspense and Aquaspense SL Still in use. Diagen Turbo Grinders Very efficient grinders/low heat transfer. We utilize every day. Atlantis Components for Astra It is still our default implant abutment provider if a specific manufacturer is not requested. Atlantis Abutments still remain a leader in the industry. Bleach Shades for IPS e.max Bleach shades for ceramics-we cannot do our daily work without them. DiaShine Polishing Compound This is my go to polishing product which I have been using for over 20 years. Giflex-TR Great rotary tool for sectioning models and dies. CB-50/Alloy Brochure SLM-Captek or any other available alloy has allowed us to reconfigure our production workflows more efficiently and as the demand for alloy restorations continues to diminish this is definitely a cost effective measure. incoris Blocks Quite a wide variety of materials are now available CEREC Blocks An industry mainstay and an integral component of the CEREC Connect protocol. inlab CAD/CAM Software Now on inlab version 16 (shown) August/September 2017 Journal of Dental Technology 13

3 What s Still Hot inlab MC XL Milling Unit I believe the MC XL now has improved motors but it's still the same unit Dentsply-Sirona sells along with their newer unit the MC-X5. Although the X5 is more productive we still need this one for quick turn arounds and implant restorations. itero itero is now on its 4th or 5th generation scanner with the introduction of the itero Element. This was our first foray into the digital acquisition realm and it is still a viable and strong platform. IPS e.max CAD LT Excellent product. More shade and translucency options available now. Still widely used. OROTIG XXS Professional Laser Welder/ Phaser ec1 Lasers and Phasers-These are the types of items that we can hardly imagine conducting business without them in place due to the convenience and quality they allow us. We haven t soldered anything in years. Programat P500 and Programat P700 Now it is the Programat P510 and P710 Love these furnaces. They cost a little more but perform and function beautifully. Sakura Interaction Spray Glaze Spray glaze-awesome Programat EP 5000 EP 5000 is a great furnace! It is still a work-horse and is in operation daily. Quality Connection Workbook Safelink continues to offer OSHA and DAMAS quality system consulting as well as keeping our industry informed regarding FDA guidelines. We have been using their services for over 20 years. Pi-Ku-Plast HP 36 Excellent product, utilized in our laboratory every day. Star Dental High Speed Handpieces This is a personal decision and I have always liked to use the contra angled aspect of these handpieces. 14 Journal of Dental Technology August/September 2017

4 What s Not Ceramco 3 Improved Margin and New Final Margin Porcelain A non-starter as the industry has moved rapidly towards metal free products. PFM porcelain shoulder margins are becoming obsolete due to the advancement of Zirconia material Not sure how many labs hand build porcelain. Cordless Heated Dental Waxing Instruments Very little need for manual waxing due to print and mill technology. Elite Double Family of VPS Duplication Material/ LeanRock Die Stone Good quality duplicating materials are still needed on a limited basis but as milled and printed models overtake the industry their use will continue to decline. Same with die stone. Life-Like Presentation Wax The digital design and printing of diagnostic models is the way to go. Gnathoflex Premium When we waxed these worked well. Now most everything is 3D printed. Digital designs negate the use of these types of forms. Imagen 3D I don t believe this product is still available New IPS d.sign and IPS InLine Bleach Shades Not too many labs build ceramic PFM these days. Excellence DVD Series DVDs are becoming dated in general. Most companies are now streaming YouTube and/or podcasts. Open-Platform Dental CAD/ CAM Software Technology Not familiar with this software. 5 What s Not Ree-Cast SLM is taking over rapidly. The Universal ShadeARM Good idea but I don t believe many were sold. Digital photos from smart phones are the industry norm. Glamour and credentialing photography still requires SLR cameras. Sure-Fit Die Spacer 99.5% of our restorations are via CAD (no die spacer needed). Zimmer One-Piece Implant 3.0mm Angled I have never been a fan of this type of approach as there are too many variables that can go awry in the placement which would inevitably compromise the final restoration.
