Which materials can be used to produce reliable, reproducible and aesthetic results, which convince the dentist and satisfy discerning patients? In dental technology this term is used not only for silicate ceramics but also oxide ceramics despite completely different forming techniques and physical properties. Silicate ceramic Silicate ceramic is also known as glass-ceramic. Glass is an amorphous substance, which is created when a molten material is so quickly cooled that, though crystal nuclei form during the solidification process, there is insufficient time for the crystallisation process. Chemically, glasses are classified according to the glass formers. Silicon oxide (SiO2) based glasses are used for dental restorations due to their chemical stability and the resulting high biocompatibility. With silicate ceramics, crystals (in the micro or nano range) are embedded in a glass matrix (molten glass). The coefficient of thermal expansion and strength are precisely adjusted with the aid of the type and proportion of crystals in the silicate ceramic. The crystals that produce this effect in glassceramics for dental restorations are leucite, lithium-disilicate, mica, fluorapatite and hydroxylapatite. Glass-ceramics are thus differentiated according to the type of crystals and are frequently called by that term in the daily dental routine. Dental leucite glass-ceramic is also differentiated according to the raw materials, whereby feldspar ceramic, unlike synthetic leucite ceramic, contains feldspar as source powder. Oxide ceramic Oxide ceramics have a low-glass phase or are even glass phase-free. In contrast to glass, they are not formed by melting and casting but generally by pressing ceramic powders. The units obtain their geometry and typical material properties only after subsequent sintering at high temperatures. Oxide ceramics for dental restorations consist of aluminium oxide or partially stabilised zirconia. First the porous pre-form is produced by dry pressing the source powder or slip casting and is then sintered. The subsequent contouring of the restoration is completed using CAD/CAM or copy milling. The volumetric shrinkage due to the sinter process at a later stage must always be taken into account to ensure an optimal fit of the restoration intraorally. BeCe Air Zirkon laboratory turbine Due to its material properties zirconia reacts very sensitively to excessive heat build-up on a specific area. For this reason we recommend completing final custom trimming under water cooling. The ideal system components for trimming are the water-cooled BeCe Air Zirkon laboratory turbine and diamond rotary instruments which are specially designed for trimming zirconia e.g. the zirconia rotary instrument set for trimming flat surfaces of primary telescope crowns. All fully sintered diamond rotary instruments, which are suitable for use in a water-cooled turbine, can also be used for trimming.
