9 Abstract In this research, we explored the relationships among negative physical self, body image coping strategies and depression/anxiety. Study 1, we revised the body image coping strategies questionnaire through an investigation of 597 female college students. Study 2, we conducted a series of descriptive statistics to understand the basic circumstances of the female college students via a survey of 536 students. Study 3, we explored the relationship between negative physical self, body image coping strategies and depression/anxiety. The main conclusions of this research are as follows: (1) The result of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis showed that three factors are included in the questionnaire: Appearance fixing, positive rational acceptance and avoidance. The questionnaire's overall internal consistency coefficient was and the coefficient of internal consistency of each dimension in the range of (2) The female students self report about negative physical self was in the middle level, and there were no significant differences in terms of class and subject. As to the factor of fat, there was a significant difference in terms of birthplace. (3) In terms of class, there were no significant differences about the use of appearance fixing and avoidance among students. But we can see a significant difference in the factor of positive rational acceptance. (4) The positive correlations between avoidance strategy and both anxiety and depression were significant, so were the correlations between appearance fixing and anxiety or depression. The negative correlations between potisive rational acceptance and anxiety or depression were also significant. Avoidance and appearance-fixing strategies were significantly related to the total score of the NPS and its sub-dimensions except for thinness. Positive rational acceptance was negatively correlated with the facial appearance at a statistically significant level. II

10 (5) The relationship between negative physical self and anxiety/depression was not significantly moderated by coping strategies. But avoidance can significantly moderate the relationship between general appearance and anxiety/depression. Key Words: negative physical self; body image coping strategies; depression; anxiety III
