5 Membership Guidelines AIMS The aims of the Division are: a. To define and develop the field of counselling psychology in Hong Kong with regard to service, training, research and professional conditions. b. To promote the highest professional and ethical standards in counselling psychology. c. To do all such things which are conducive to achieving these aims. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES IN COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY a. Assessment (psychometric or non-psychometric) is to ascertain current mental health status, strengths, weaknesses and competencies and to formulate psychological explanations of clients distress b. Interventions are activities based on psychological assessment, professional knowledge, skills and judgment to promote, sustain, and/or enhance positive functioning and sense of well being in clients through preventive/ developmental and/or remedial services c. Research is scientific inquiry, examination, investigation, or experimentation for the purpose of expanding and disseminating psychological knowledge d. Evaluation is the systematic collection of data to determine the significance, worth, or condition of a psychological intervention, service, or program of service e. Consultation is the provision of professional advice or service based on psychological skills and judgment that will assist others in the identification and resolution of problems f. Teaching is the planning, organisation, and delivery of knowledge and skills related to counselling psychology. MEMBERSHIP Full Membership will be open to Fellows, Associate Fellows or Graduate Members of the Hong Kong Psychological Society who meet the following qualification criteria. a. Have satisfactorily completed an accredited undergraduate degree, in psychology or equivalent, approved by the HKPS; (Version 25Oct2013) 5

6 AND b. Have satisfactorily completed an accredited postgraduate Degree, or its equivalent, in Counselling Psychology, that includes the core subjects as follows: (1) Theory and practice of two major therapeutic models. (2) Assessment, formulation, planning and implementation. (3) Research methods and skills. (4) Ethical and professional issues in practicing psychology (5) Two of the following courses: Human growth and development Working with a specific client group eg., the elderly, children and families, couples, adolescents and youths Working with specific problems eg., substance abuse, childhood abuse, depression, anxiety, stress, study problems, chronic illnesses, bereavement In-depth knowledge and skills in specific therapeutic approaches Program development and evaluation AND c. Have successfully completed not less than 1000 hours supervised practicum within the postgraduate degree as below (please submit official transcripts to indicate sufficient supervised practicum hours): 1. Supervised practicum : 1000 hours supervised practicum in at least 2 of the following settings: (Remarks: Those 1000 hours should include 200 hours of direct face-to- face supervision; and the supervisors being full member of DCoP or eligible for membership of the Division) Adult psychological concerns Child & adolescent psychological concerns People with health or wellness concerns Family/Marital concerns People with special needs AND 2. Have regular, ongoing supervision, consultation and/or engagement in other forms of reflective practice through approved professional development activities in relation to the clinical practice. 7 Honorary Membership: The Division Committee may recommend for approval as Honorary Members, by a General Meeting of the Division, any Honorary Fellow, Fellow, Associate Fellow or Graduate Member of the Hong Kong Psychological Society who has made a distinguished contribution to the advancement of counselling psychology. Honorary Members are not entitled to vote. AFFILIATESHIP a. Affiliateship of the Division will be open to candidates who are not eligible for Full Membership of the Division, Honorary Fellows, Fellows, Associate Fellows, Graduate Members or Affiliates of the Society. b. No technical qualification will be required on the part of a candidate for admission to Affiliateship provided that s/he has a long-standing interest in counselling psychology or that his or her professional occupation is normally with a genuine interest in counselling psychology. c. Affiliates will be entitled to attend scientific meetings. They may also attend other meetings at the invitation of the Committee but they will not be entitled to vote. d. Affiliates of the Division will sustain their affiliation as long as they strictly refrain from publicizing it, otherwise the Division will repudiate the affiliation. -END- (Version 25Oct2013) 7
