2 It is a condition that effects a person s thinking, feeling, and mood. Sometimes it is acute, lasting less than 6 months, and can be the result of a life event.
3 Other times it is chronic, lasting more than 6 months and can last a life time. In these situations it is considered a mental health disorder
4 Mental health conditions or disorders are the result of a combination of factors including: Genetics environment lifestyle
5 Genetics: Biochemical processes, brain circuitry, and brain structure can play a role. Environment: Stressful work and home environments, as well as traumatic life events can make people more susceptible. Lifestyle: A person s lifestyle can also make them more prone.
6 Each person will have a different experience with a mental health condition or disorder, they do not all look alike. People can also have multiple conditions or disorders.
7 FACTS Information from NAMI One in 4 adults experiences a mental health condition One in 5 children/teens years will experience a mental health condition Half of all mental health conditions begin before age 14 75% of all mental health conditions develop before age 24
8 Normal personality and behavioral changes of adolescence can mimic or mask the symptoms of a mental health condition.

11 ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a developmental disorder where there are significant problems with attention, hyperactivity, or acting impulsively. It can effect one s ability to attend to tasks or complete tasks. Organization and time keeping can be a problem. It can also appear like acting out or attention seeking behaviors.

14 Anxiety Disorders Anxiety Disorders are heightened levels of anxiety that persist and interfere with a person s normal functioning. They can occur when there is an external stimulus present or can be the result of internal thoughts. Anxiety can appear like fearfulness, withdrawal, or clinging behaviors. Memory and recall can be effected.

17 Think: What feelings do you have? What are you thinking? How would this affect your behavior?
18 Depression Depression is a persistent feeling of sadness or hopelessness, that can last anywhere from 2 weeks to several months, or longer. It can effect ones energy, motivation, and feelings of self confidence. It can appear as withdrawal, isolation, and irritability. Self harming behaviors and suicide are more extreme forms.

21 Oppositional Defiant Disorder Oppositional Defiant Disorder is disorder that is marked by persistent anger, irritability, defiance, and being argumentative. This may appear as hostility or refusal to comply. Not taking responsibility or blaming others for their own actions is common. It can occur in only one setting such as home or school.
