5 Optical Coherence Tomography (or OCT) is an essential medical imaging technique that has been used in eye care for the past 2 decades. It uses a specific wavelength of light and the principles of light reflection and scatter in eye tissue to obtain 3 dimensional images of the structures within the eye. It provides images with resolution up to one thousandth of a millimetre and has the advantages of being non-invasive, fast, relatively cheap and does not have any radiation. At Lee Eye Centre, we have been using Time Domain OCT since its inception in the early 2000s and moved on to Spectral Domain OCT with the Optovue OCT in We have now procured the latest Swept Source OCT unit by Topcon. This represents the First unit in Malaysia and we are proud to be able to offer this unique and advanced OCT modality to our patients. The Swept Source OCT has faster scanning speed, uses longer wavelength for deeper penetration, provides 3D images and gives better resolution in comparison with Time Domain and Spectral Domain OCT. Triton Swept Source OCT Wavelength of light source 1050nm Deeper penetration more details seen Scanning speed 100,000 scans per second Larger scanning area OCT Angiography Yes No 3-D retinal photography Yes No Fundus Autofluoresecnce Yes No Standard OCT 840nm Less penetration 68,000 scans per second Smaller scanning area The DRI OCT Triton is a multimodal imaging machine which not only provides Swept Source OCT imaging but is also capable of taking Fundus images (photos of the retina and optic nerve) and performing high resolution angiograms (blood vessel analysis). Unprecedented Image Quality The Triton s Swept Source technology is the First of its kind and has the fastest scanning speed and longest wavelength to enable the capture of exceedingly clear, detailed images into the deepest layers of the eye within a very short period of time. Remarkable Diagnostic Ability Higher resolution images and being able to see deeper layers of the eye will allow better understanding of eye diseases and provide the advantage of earlier disease detection, subsequent treatment and monitoring.
6 OCT Angiography This is the newest method of imaging blood vessels in the eye and is capable of providing valuable insights into numerous blinding diseases such as Age related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy and Retinal Vein Occlusions and will be very useful as a guide for treatment and monitoring of such diseases. OCT Angiography is likely to replace traditional forms of angiography in the near future as there is no need to inject dye into the blood vessels in order to image them.
