1 Introduction This resource has been created to assist pharmacists, and other appropriately trained members of the pharmacy team, to ensure compatibility of insulin products/devices and blood glucose monitoring equipment supplied by the pharmacy. For example, ensuring a patient s reusable insulin pen is compatible with the insulin cartridge which has been dispensed. Pharmacy teams should check that patients have been advised on the correct technique when testing for blood glucose and that they are familiar with their particular devices. Where a patient is enquiring about the compatibility of a glucose testing strip in respect to a blood glucose meter which has been discontinued, they should be advised to contact the respective manufacturer to have their meter replaced. This is because a new meter will have replaced the discontinued model which would comply with the current standards as defined by the International Organization for Standardisation (ISO); these are designed to ensure the greatest reliability and accuracy. Manufacturers contact details can be found in Table 6: Blood glucose testing meters and compatible test strips. The six tables contained in this resource list compatibility data with respect to glucose monitoring and insulin administration devices: Table 1: ly compatible needles with majority of insulin pens Table 2: Reusable insulin pens and compatible needles Table 3: Pre-filled disposable insulin pens and compatible needles Table 4: Lancing device and compatible lancets Table 5: Self-contained lancets Table 6: Blood glucose testing meters and compatible test strips Please note: The size/gauges of each device are not listed in this resource and therefore this should be cross checked against the prescription, and where necessary checked with the patient/ prescriber to ensure the correct item is dispensed Blood glucose testing meters and lancing devices cannot be prescribed on an NHS prescription It is important to check the current Drug Tariff to determine if the relevant device can be prescribed on an NHS prescription This resource can be used in conjunction with the NPA insulin identification checker, which has been designed to assist pharmacy teams to identify the correct insulin product to supply when dispensing generically written prescriptions.
