1 Graphing Practice Worksheet When to make a line graph? Line graphs show changes of information over a time period. For instance, if the US Department of Health wanted to look at the obesity rates in the USA every year over the past decade, a line graph would be used. When to make a bar graph? Bar graphs are used when comparing groups of information. For instance, if the US Department of Health wanted to look at the obesity rates of men to women, a bar graph would be used. When to make a pie graph? Pie graphs are used to compare parts of a whole. For instance, if the US Department of Health wanted to look at the percentage of people in the US population who were classified as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Independent and Dependent Variables Graphs are often used to display data collected during scientific investigations. In any investigation, scientists explore independent and dependent variables. The independent variable is what is being manipulated in the experiment. When making a graph, remember the TICALS rule! o T- TITLE- Do you have a title that communicates what your graph is about? o I- INTERVALS- Are your bars evenly spaced? Are they the same width? Did you make good use of your space? o C- COLOR- Did you color/shade your bars nicely? If you needed a key, did you color-code it? o A- AXIS- Did you make a nice, neat axis and draw your lines using a ruler? o L- LABELS- Did you label both axes, with the information from the data table? o S- SCALE- Did you evenly space your vertical values and use as much of the vertical space as possible?

2 1. Think about how you spend your time each day. Complete the table below to include your activities, and the amount of time you spend doing each. Naturally, you will want to include school and sleeping. In order to construct a pie graph, you will also need to know what percentage of your day each activity occupies. To calculate percent, use this formula: number of hours spent doing activity 24 hours Once you have constructed your data table, use the information in the table to complete the graph below. (Ideally, you would also use a protractor and calculate the number of degrees that you should make each section of your pie chart. For this activity, we are just going to freehand it and skip over the protractor component). Activity Time (hours) Percentage of Your Day

3 2. Suppose you spend the day at a swimming pool and every hour you counted how many people were there. Construct the appropriate type of graph that will best represent your data. Time of day Number of People 10:00 AM 11 11:00 AM 23 12:00 (noon) 42 1:00 PM 53 2:00 PM 47 3:00 PM 41 4:00 PM 33 5:00 PM 42 6:00 PM 38 7:00 PM 22

4 3. A local bakery has been keeping track of how many of each type of cookie they sell and wants to create a graph of information. Construct the appropriate type of graph using the data below to help them visualize their sales. Type of Cookie Number Sold Sugar Cookie 42 Snickerdoodle 56 Chocolate Chip 94 Peanut Butter 82 M&M 73

5 4. Diabetes is a disease affecting the insulin producing glands of the pancreas. If there is not enough insulin being produced by the cells the amount of glucose in the blood will remain high. A blood glucose level above 140 for an extended period of time is not considered normal. This disease, if not brought under control, will lead to severe complications and even death. Use the data in the table below to construct a graph of the information. Time After Eating (hours) Person A Glucose Level (in ml/l of blood) Person B Glucose Level (in ml/l of blood)

6 5. As part of a class project, you asked a group of preschoolers about their favorite cartoon. For each cartoon, you recorded the number of boys and the number of girls who said it was their favorite. Construct a graph to display the information. Cartoon Boys Girls PJ Masks 12 4 Doc McStuffins 6 16 Mickey Roadster Racers Paw Patrol Llama Llama 7 10

The graph should contain 5 major parts: the title, the independent variable, the dependent variable, the scales for each variable, and a legend.

The graph should contain 5 major parts: the title, the independent variable, the dependent variable, the scales for each variable, and a legend. BLIZZARD BAG #2 Please complete the activity below. You will need to print out this activity sheet (pages 2-5 only) OR Write out the answers on a separate piece of paper and graph on a piece of graphing
