3 Why beanbags?
4 Session objective To develop delegates ability to incorporate beanbags in Gymnastics activities as a teaching tool to enhance pupils learning and fitness.
5 High quality lesson structure Part 1 Two section Warm Up: a) Whole body pulse raising activity b) Conditioning phrase Part 2 Key Task e.g. whole class skill development activity Part 3 Development of the Key Task e.g. link skills into a sequence Part 4 Cool Down EVERY part MUST contribute to achievement of the unit Core Task!
6 What is a Core Task? End product of a unit of work e.g. a Gymnastics sequence. Design/select a Core Task as the starting point for planning a Gymnastics unit of work to provide: -pupils with a relevant challenge -teachers with a basis for planning (and assessment).
7 Example Core Task Choose an item of hand apparatus and use it to create and perform a sequence of 4-6 different actions. Make sure you show control + coordination of both your body movement and the hand apparatus and that you show variety in speed, level + direction. Yr 3 Hand Apparatus unit, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE.
8 What is the purpose of part 2 of a PE warm up? Stretching muscles and mobilising joints? +
9 Key Task example 1 (whole class skill development activity) Choose 2 or 3 fun gym shapes and link them together to make a short movement phrase. Make sure you hold each shape before moving onto the next shape. Foundation Stage Fun Gym Shapes unit Core Task, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE.
10 Key Task example 2 To perform one rolling action showing good control and quality in rotation. Lesson 1 learning objective, Year 1 Rocking + Rolling unit, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE.
11 Choose an item of hand apparatus and use it to create and perform a sequence of 4-6 different actions. Make sure you show control + coordination of both your body movement and the hand apparatus and that you show variety in speed, level + direction. Year 3 Hand Apparatus unit Core Task, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE. Can you Key Task example 3 -Keep control of a side or single knee balance whilst throwing + catching the beanbag to yourself? -Balance the beanbag on your head then full turn on tiptoes. -Flick/transfer the beanbag from one body part to another whilst controlling a 1 foot stand e.g. flick it from a raised knee to catch it in your hands?
12 Development of Key Task Part 3 of a high quality lesson will develop the lesson s Key Task Work in pairs to come up with further ideas for throwing and catching, balancing, flicking and/or transferring the beanbag during the performance of individual Gymnastics actions*. * account for the space/others when exploring i.e. keep the actions basic and the throwing low! Refer to the BG Core Proficiency Resource Pack wall charts to inspire ability appropriate movement vocabulary ideas.
13 Hand Apparatus Unit of Work Co-ordination Jump Throw Develops Fundamental Movement Skills Balance Catch
14 Cool Down 1 Choose at least 2 clear positions of stillness and combine them with other actions to create a short sequence of 3 4 actions. Make sure you show different points of contact in your chosen positions of stillness. Year 2 Points of Contact unit Core Task, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE.
15 Cool Down 2 Create and perform a floor and apparatus sequence of 4 6 actions which combines balances with other actions. Make sure you apply the Principles of Balance so that you can perform your sequence with control. Year 4 Principles of Balance unit Core Task, Cambridgeshire SOW for PE. but what do we mean by the Principles of Balance? Pupils apply the knowledge that the most stable balances will have: many points of contact a large surface area a low Centre of Gravity
16 Skills e.g. technical accuracy, ease of rotation, FMS etc. Fitness e.g. strength, flexibility, balance and co-ordination. Performance quality e.g. tension, extension, clarity, focus, control etc. Fun! Class control e.g. concentration + focus. Beanbag s in Gymnastics enhance Competition Social skills e.g. co-operation Thinking skills e.g. decision making, problem solving etc. Understanding of compositional devices e.g. levels, partner relationships etc. To maximise the quality of teaching, ensure the way in which you involve beanbags as a teaching tool progresses pupils towards achievement of the lesson objective/core Task.
17 National Curriculum PoS KS1 master basic movements including.throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities. KS2 use throwing and catching in isolation and in combination and develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance, for example through.gymnastics.
18 What is a Conditioning Phrase? A taught movement phrase of blended basic Gymnastics actions which work to develop pupils fitness, movement vocabulary, movement memory, sequencing, performance quality etc. N.B. Design one phrase per Core Task to develop over the unit.
19 Example Conditioning Phrase Based on a Core Task focussing on the 5 Fun Gym Shapes : Straddle sit Tuck sit Piked V-sit Push up to back support Turn to front support Jump or walk feet to crouch Uncurl Standing star shape finish.

Work with a partner to devise ways in which beanbags can be used as a teaching tool to enhance learning in relation to this Conditioning Phrase e.g. explore how you can use beanbags to improve your partner s performance of the Fun Gym Shapes? N.B. You can use the summary on slide 16 to inspire ideas.
21 Your school setting How can you make use of beanbags to enhance learning in Gymnastics lessons in your own setting? Think of a gymnastics lesson/unit of work that you have recently taught or are due to teach. With your partner, discuss and practically explore how you could use beanbags to enhance those activities in relation to the lesson/unit outcome.
