3 Advice before attending the Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Group If you are unable to attend or have any queries please contact the Cardiac Team on or l Wear loose clothing and flat shoes l Please bring a bottle of water and if you are diabetic, a small snack e.g. biscuits, sandwich l Please allow 2 hours after your last meal l Always bring your GTN spray or GTN sublingual tablets with you (if you have been prescribed them) or you will not be able to join the group l If you are feeling very stressed, tired, generally unwell, have had a change in your normal symptoms, been advised that you need further heart related investigations or have started a course of antibiotics, please phone before you attend as it may affect whether you can exercise and you may be sent home l Please discuss with the staff before the group starts, any changes in medication, any problems after the last session and if you have any painful joints or muscles l In the unlikely event you have chest pain, are unusually short of breath, have dizziness/lightheadedness, palpitations or nausea, please report this immediately 3

4 Exercise at home When exercising at home remember to warm up to begin and cool down towards the end, as advised by the Cardiac Physiotherapist. After warming up, your level of exertion when exercising at home should be similar to the level of exertion experienced at the exercise group. Try to use the Borg Scale (on page 8), which was explained to you at your assessment and exercise at level 3. You should feel that you are breathing more deeply than normal, but that you do not feel puffed and can speak without difficulty i.e. You should feel slightly breathless. If this is not the case you are working too hard and need to ease off a little. Also if the muscles in your legs and/or arms start to feel tired, ease off and slow down. If you experience any angina symptoms when exercising at home, follow the appropriate instructions you should have for dealing with them, including (if required) the use of GTN spray or GTN sublingual tablets. If you have severe chest pain which is unbearable, phone 999 or 112 immediately. Do not phone your doctor or NHS Direct. 4
