2 Introduction This leaflet explains about the lower limb exercise group. When and where does the Lower Limb Group meet? The lower limb exercise group is held in the Physiotherapy Department at Congleton War memorial Hospital every Thursday, with appointments between am. Who attends the group? The exercise group is for patients receiving physiotherapy for problems with their hips, knees, ankles or feet. Why Have I been referred? Whilst you are attending for physiotherapy your physiotherapist may decide that exercise based therapy is the best treatment for you. Unfortunately individual treatment sessions limit the amount of time you can spend on your exercise programme. The Lower limb group runs every Wednesday afternoon. This enables patients to exercise without time restraints restricting their exercise programme. What happens in the Group? Each patient works through an exercise programme designed specifically for them. There can be up to 5 patients working alongside each other in the Physiotherapy Department. During each attendance you will be reviewed by the physiotherapist running the group, to assess your progress and discuss any problems that you may have. The physiotherapist will guide you through your exercise programme Leaflet Ref: Published: 04/15 Review: 04/18 Page 2
3 over the first few sessions. You will then find as you become more confident you will work through your exercises more independently. The physiotherapist will gradually increase the number of repetitions or difficulty of your exercises as you improve. As you progress in physiotherapist, in collaboration with you, may add further goals to your treatment. The majority of patients exercise for between minutes. Between sessions you will be advised which exercises to work o at home. What will happen before I am referred? Your Physiotherapist will have discussed and agreed your treatment goals for attending the group with you. You will then be given an appointment to attend the group. Your treatment details will be given to the Physiotherapist looking after you whilst you attend the group. What should I bring to the group? You should wear: - Loose and comfortable clothing Footwear that is flat or has a low wide heel suitable for physical activity It is not necessary to buy trainers or tracksuits. As it can become warm, you might like to bring a bottle of water with you. How many sessions will I attend? You will continue to attend the group until you have achieved your goals or feel happy to continue your exercise programme at home. The exact number of sessions can vary between patients. At discharge you will be advised with exercises to continue with at home. Leaflet Ref: Published: 04/15 Review: 04/18 Page 3
4 What happens if I don t improve? If you are still experiencing problems that the exercises have not improved, you may be given an appointment for a review with the physiotherapist that initially assessed you. Why does exercise help? The exercises used in the exercise group are chosen to address your individual problems. Exercises are beneficial in a number of ways. You may be given exercises to improve: - The flexibility in any of your joints that are stiff Strengthen week muscles Improve the flexibility of tight soft tissues Improve your balance Increase your confidence and fitness in preparation for your return to work/leisure activities. In turn, these can improve any pain symptoms you are experiencing. I don t have any previous experience of exercising You don t need to have any previous experience of exercising. Each patient is treated as an individual with their own specific goals. You will work and progress at a rate that is comfortable for you. You are not expected to compete against other patients. Any Questions? Leaflet Ref: Published: 04/15 Review: 04/18 Page 4
