The benefits of HIIT training include increased metabolism, calorie burn, strength, and endurance. It consists of repeated intervals of short duration, high-intensity bouts alternating with intervals of lower intensity recovery periods. The structure of the intervals can vary widely depending on the application or goals of the individual. One of the more common ratios is 2:1, indicating that the recovery interval is twice as long as the work interval. A typical HIIT workout usually lasts about minutes, and this structure can be applied to cardiovascular (for example, alternating sprints with jogging) or strength-focused (for example, push-ups or box jumps) exercises. Anyone can use a HIIT approach, because the high intensity is based on their own fitness levels, making it appropriate for almost anyone.
