Veteran s Day at Lakeview On Friday, November 11 th we celebrate, honor and remember the brave men and women who served in our military, putting their lives on the line to protect the freedom and safety of our great nation. We are blessed to have such a large number of veterans living among us here at LVT. The great sacrifice and duty that these honorable men and women displayed for each of us are an immeasurable blessing to our lives as Americans. We thank you for your dedicated service and commitment! On October 13, 2016, U.S. Congressman Daniel Webster presented to the Lakeview Terrace Veterans Club an American Flag that was flown over the US Capital on July 4 th of this year. Congressman Webster met with a group of veterans and Mr. Richard Zinck accepted the American Flag on behalf of the Lakeview Terrace Veterans Club. Mr. Zinck has been instrumental in leading the Lakeview Terrace Memorial Flagpole project and we are grateful for his efforts. Thanks Richard! 3
The top 3 low-impact exercises for seniors Published: Thursday, October 27, 2016 by Interim HealthCare Chronic joint pain, arthritis and even just the regular wear-and-tear of old age can make it difficult to engage in regular physical activity. For those who are looking for ways to stay active without causing damage to their bones or joints, low-impact exercises are a great way to reduce the risk of injury while still promoting your health, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Research has shown that by staying active with low-impact exercises, it can help reduce pain and improve your overall well-being. Consider these three low-impact exercises: 1. Swimming As one of the best low-impact activities, swimming takes the strain off of all parts of your body including the hips, knees and ankles. While reducing your risk of injury, swimming laps or taking part in water aerobics is not only a great form of cardio but it also strengthens many muscle groups for a full-body workout. Finding a local pool to swim at one to two days per week is a great way to stay active and social. 2. Yoga Another great low-impact exercise option is yoga. Without any hard impact, this form of physical activity can help to improve balance, flexibility and strength. As a relaxing form of stretching and meditating, yoga not only helps to improve your physical health, but your mental and emotional health as well, according to Everyday Health. Practicing yoga can help to reduce your levels of stress and blood pressure level. After a yoga class your muscles will feel stronger and your mind will be happier as well. 4
3. Walking If you're looking for an activity that doesn't require any equipment aside from your sneakers, consider walking as your form of low-impact exercise. It's an easy way to get outside, get some movement and get your heart rate up. As a bonus, if you're also working on improving balance, toe walking or carefully walking backward can help to do so, according to the CDC. No matter which low-impact activity you choose, it's important to find the one that feels most comfortable for you. 8 Harnessing HUNGER Given the opportunity, some of us would eat all day. The desire to eat is sometimes triggered by hunger, other times it s cravings, boredom or other social or emotional factors. Hunger is the body s physical need for food. Appetite, on the other hand, is what causes the munchies. Keeping the appetite in check is key for losing or maintaining a healthy weight. Eat regularly. Eating before you get too hungry will help you make healthier food choices and be less likely to overeat. Eating at regularly scheduled times helps you control your hunger throughout the day. Bulk up your meals. Foods with lots of fiber like beans, fruits, vegetables and whole grains are good choices because they have a high water content, which helps make you feel full. Eat slowly. It takes the brain as long as 20 minutes to get the signal you re full. Add more water. Water is also a great way to keep you feeling full all day. Obviously, the water helps to make you feel full, but it also raises your metabolic rate, which boosts how fast you burn calories. 8
In The Spotlight At LVT Our Library Our Lakeview Terrace Library joins writers and book lovers in recognizing November's National Novel Month, a time when professional and amateur writers meet online to encourage creativity in writing through tips and projects. We all love a good book and have our favorite authors. Publishers wait until the end of the year to bring out their top authors, possibly to tempt holiday shoppers to buy books. This month we eagerly await titles from many of our favorites including James Patterson, Michael Connelly, John Grisham, Lee Child, and Bill O'Reilly. You'll notice most of them are mystery books. There's something about mysteries that intrigues us, and a good writer keeps us engrossed to the last page. The Lakeview Terrace library has over 3,900 items available for our residents. The inventory ranges from fiction, non-fiction, biographical, DVD s, Audio Disc and much more. 9
Lakeview Terrace Gives A Hoot We would like to thank all of you for your support with our first breast cancer walk. We raised $793 to donate to the Ribbon Riders, a local organization that helps families who have been affected by breast cancer. 10
Lakeview Terrace Mission Statement To Provide a Community Where residents will feel secure, Be able to enjoy meaningful relationships And activities of interest; Where one can be autonomous and Can live independently, Yet have available Quality care and services And, above all, Experience joy. 331 Raintree Drive, Altoona, Florida Contact us at lifecareinfo@lakeviewterrace.com Lic #
