5 Principles of mat-based Pilates Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Understand the origins of mat-based Pilates 2. Understand the phases of a mat-based Pilates class Evidence requirements 1. Knowledge outcomes There must be evidence that you possess all the knowledge and understanding listed in the Knowledge section of this unit. In most cases this can be done by professional discussion and/or oral questioning. Other methods, such as projects, assignments and/or reflective accounts may also be used. 2. Tutor/Assessor guidance You will be guided by your tutor/assessor on how to achieve learning outcomes in this unit. All outcomes must be achieved. 3. External paper There is no external paper requirement for this unit. UV
6 Developing knowledge Achieving knowledge outcomes You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed using the assessment methods listed below*: Projects Observed work Witness statements Audio-visual media Evidence of prior learning or attainment Written questions Oral questions Assignments Case studies Professional discussion Where applicable your assessor will integrate knowledge outcomes into practical observations through professional discussion and/or oral questioning. 9 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Understand the origins of mat-based Pilates History of Joseph Pilates: Joseph, Clara, origins, background, training influences, work with war veterans, journey to New York, typical clients, lack of official training programme. Traditional approach assumption that the body is starting from a position of optimal alignment, very advanced, unsuitable for general population, potential for modification, consideration given that Joseph Pilates built up to the advanced level over decades, mat-based Pilates preceded equipment. Contemporary approach realisation that traditional approach was unsuitable for general population (e.g. contra-indications attached with performing classic moves in their entirety), contemporary (break down of component parts, mastery of basic optimal alignment before adding levers, maintaining balance between challenge and a struggle, accessibility to wider audience, evolved exercises (modifications, adaptations, progressions)). Original principles of Joseph Pilates: Breathing, concentration, control, isolation, centring, precision, flow, routine. Fundamentals of mat-based Pilates: Fundamentals of stabilisation scapula stabilisation at shoulder girdle, lumbar spine, pelvic girdle, role of thoracolumbar fascia and diaphragm in core stability. Fundamentals of breathing diaphragmatic, thoracic, lateral, single and double breath application of breathing to movement, abdominal/diaphragmatic breathing for relaxation. Fundamentals of mobilisation mobilise joints and soft tissue through full and natural ranges of movement, safe and effective joint movement, postural and structural alignment, postural types, plumb line alignment using surface markings/body landmarks as markers, modification of range of motion to meet individual needs. Fundamentals of articulation of the spine in all planes of movement (flexion, extension, rotation, lateral flexion). 34 original mat-based Pilates exercises: Repertoire of Joseph Pilates (the hundred, the roll up, the roll over, the one leg circle, rolling back, the one leg stretch, the double leg stretch, the spine stretch, rocker with open legs, the corkscrew, the saw, the swan dive, the one leg kick, the double kick, the neck pull, the scissors, the bicycle, the shoulder bridge, the spine twist, the jack knife, the side kick, the teaser, the hip twist with stretched arms, swimming, the leg pull (front), the leg pull (back), the side kick kneeling, the side bend, the boomerang, the seal, the crab, rocking, the control balance, the push-up). 10 Outcome 2: Understand the phases of a mat-based Pilates class Phases of Pilates sessions: Preparation phase breathing, concentration, postural alignment, mobilisation, activation of the core, core endurance, balance, gentle stretching. Main phase whole body movement in all anatomical planes (flexion, extension, rotation, circumduction and lateral flexion), including torso and lower/upper body extremities). Closing phase maintenance stretching, developmental stretching, relaxation, active or passive. Purpose and value of preparation phase: Physical and psychological preparation, optimise performance, progress practice of breathing techniques, concentration, focus on postural alignment, mobilisation, core activation, balance, warm-up appropriate to participants/ environment. Purpose and value of main phase: Strength, core strength and stability, mobility, endurance, function, solid foundation for any movement, whole body movement, in all anatomical planes.
