3 UV20705 Exploring equality and diversity The uniformed services work with a wide range of people from all ages and backgrounds. This unit will help you learn and understand issues around equality. It will also help you to appreciate why individual differences and cultures are important. It will provide you with an insight into where discrimination, stereotyping and prejudice can occur in our society. UV20705_v6

5 Exploring equality and diversity Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Understand what equality means 2. Understand the ways in which people might choose to describe themselves 3. Understand what diversity means 4. Understand stereotyping and labelling and their effects 5. Understand prejudice and discrimination and their effects Evidence requirements 1. Knowledge outcomes There must be evidence that you possess all the knowledge and understanding listed in the Knowledge section of this unit. This evidence may include projects, assignments, case studies, reflective accounts, oral/written questioning and/or other forms of evidence. 2. 13 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Understand what equality means Equality: Education, housing, health care, employment, same opportunities for all, access for all, choice, support. Problems: Pay (low self-esteem, feel unvalued, not appreciated, decreases motivation levels), other inequalities (e.g. promotion, pensions, holidays, gender, marital status, children, dependants, age). 14 Outcome 2: Understand the ways in which people might choose to describe themselves Individual factors: Physical characteristics weight, height, build, muscle tone. Emotions personality types (introverted, extroverted), sensitive, intuitive, thinking or feeling, judging or percieving, flow of energy). Likes and dislikes relevant to the individual. Values and beliefs personal, cultural, ethical, moral, doctrinal/ideological (religious, political), social, aesthetic. Personal description: Interests and characteristics e.g. hobbies, likes and dislikes, personality type, physical characteristics. Religion and culture faith, beliefs, philosophy, knowledge. Geographic e.g. where you live, where you are from. Discrimination: Dual discrimination discrimination because of a combination of two related characteristics (e.g. sex/age, religion or belief/race). Positive discrimination preferential treatment of members of a minority group versus majority group (e.g. sex, race, age, marital status, sexual orientation). Discrimation arising from disability treated unfavourably because of something arising in consequence of their disability (e.g. dyslexia/disciplined for spelling mistakes). Discrimation by association treated unfairly because they are associated with someone who has a protected characteristic. Protected characteristics a number of characteristics which must not be used as a reason to treat some people worse than others (age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, breast feeding, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, political opinion (e.g. Northern Ireland)). Identities: Multiple people who do not fit into boxes e.g. black, disabled etc, diverse, complex and multilayered (e.g. HIV positive gay man, black women in armed forces). 12 UV20705

15 Outcome 3: Understand what diversity means Types: Interests, beliefs, ages, lifestyles, personal, social and cultural identities. Contribution: Local community. Value: Own lives, local community, country, respect peoples differences. Outcome 4: Understand stereotyping and labelling and their effects Sterotyping/labelling: Popular belief about specific social groups or individuals, social reaction. Why do we stereotype: Ignorance, beliefs, confidence levels, fear, lack of self esteem, feel threatened. Damaging effects of sterotyping: Prejudice, bullying, disadvantage the individual, self esteem, pyschological effects, health risks, effect on performance, distance themselves from stereotyped group. Outcome 5: Understand prejudice and discrimination and their effects Prejudice: Definition (assumptions made with inadequate knowledge) development, adverse judgement/opinion formed without full facts. Discrimination: Definition (unjust treatment of people or things, unfavourable treatment of individuals/groups). Developing prejudices: Experience, peers. Types of discrimination: Direct, indirect, dual, positive, by association, arising from disability. Indirect discrimination: Working condition/rule disadvantages individuals/ groups (e.g. no ramp into shop for wheelchair). Direct discrimination: Treating one person less favourably than another. Multiple discrimination: Discrimination on more than one ground (e.g. sex and age). Effects of discrimination/prejudice: Loss of motivation, restricted opportunites, reduced individual rights, health issues (mental and physical), reduced self worth/ esteem, lack of confidence, confused UV
