1 Yoga and Pilates Instructor, HPA 1174 Spring Monday 8:00-9:50 a.m. Susan Gillis Kruman, M.Ed., RYT 500 (YOGA), Dr. Sally Sherman, Ph.D. (PILATES) Course Description This is an introductory course on the teaching of yoga and Pilates. This will not be a certification course but will provide you with the basics of how to create, instruct, and evaluate basic classes in both contents. Having knowledge of basic anatomy and prior experiences in these contents will be helpful. Course Rationale This course will provide you with important information you can utilize to get the most out of any yoga or Pilates class. What is important to include in a class? What progressions should be followed? What instructional methods should be used? What is the vocabulary of yoga and Pilates? These and many other questions will be the topics for each class in the course. Videos, hand-outs, and other supplemental materials will be provided in class. Although this is not a certification class the information provided will facilitate any certification program in either content area. Course Learning Objectives At the end of the course the student will be able to: Demonstrate through practice basic yoga and Pilates exercises, and postures Develop an appropriate, sequential progression of exercises for a yoga and Pilates class Display a knowledge of anatomy as applied to the various exercises and postures in yoga and Pilates Demonstrate a knowledge of various instructional methods and vocabulary in yoga and Pilates Teach a mini-lesson or parts of a lesson to other students in the class Demonstrate through instruction, familiarity with yoga and Pilates as a tool for personal health and lifetime fitness Required Materials:

Pilates, published by Pilates Method Alliance ( Course Expectations & Requirements For both the yoga and Pilates portions of the course, the students will be required to take additional classes outside of our instructor class. 6 additional outside yoga classes (3 live classes and 3 video classes) will be required. 6 additional outside Pilates classes will be required (3 live classes and 3 videos). Opportunities to participate in yoga and Pilates classes within the department of Health and Physical Activity (free of charge) can be found at Please Alyssa Harris at amh200@pitt.edu to obtain permission to attend one of these classes beforehand to ensure that space is available. You may choose three from the following dates but be sure to take a class from at least two different instructors. Forms for class documentation can be found in yoga and Pilates documents. Assignments and Projects There will be tests in yoga on your readings, lectures and videos. A student designed yoga sequence will be presented. There will be outside assignments in Pilates such as the creation of sequences to be prepared for practicing instruction, a history of Pilates assignment and a reflection on a podcast about osteoporosis. Attendance Due to the nature of this course, attendance is required. Experiences missed in this class cannot be made up. If excessive excused absences require the student to take an incomplete ( I ) grade, the incomplete grade can only be converted to an appropriate letter grade by the student repeating the course in a subsequent semester. Pilates will be in the first half of the semester and Yoga will be in the 2nd half of the semester. You are expected to be ON TIME for all classes. By coming late you disturb the atmosphere created by those who are already working. Please be courteous to those who are here and on time. Please be prompt and no one will have an issue with tardiness. Class will begin promptly with a roll call. If you miss roll-call you are late. Students are required to participate in the entire length of the class. The attendance policy below will be strictly enforced. Each class will require the students to teach and/or participate. Students will be graded and receive points based on the following criteria: 5 points = Full engagement 1. Came prepared to participate in teaching/discussion (completed take home assignment)

3 2. Worked well and engaged with other students and instructors 3. Participated in all aspects of the 2 hour class. 3 points = Partial engagement 1. Was not prepared to participate in teaching/discussion 2. Did not fully engage with other students and instructors 3. Did not participate in all aspects of the 2 hour class 0 points = Did not attend class Students can earn up to 5 points each week across 15 weeks (including week 1 and finals) = 75 Points Note: 2x Late = 1 absence Late = Arriving after roll call. Absences are excused under the following circumstances (below) but must be completed within 1 week of returning when accompanied by appropriate documentation. Make-ups will be given at the discretion of the module instructor: Medical Emergency or Sickness Must have a note from medical doctor documenting visit include the date missed. Mandatory Academic Event Must have a note from advisor/professor documenting the event. Personal or Family Emergency Communication with instructor is required prior to missing. NOTE: In order to earn the 5 Attendance points for excused absences, the student will be required to complete an assignment to make-up for the missed class within 1 week of returning. Discuss a plan for making-up excused classes immediately upon return. Grading 50% of your grade will be based on completion of yoga requirements and 50% of your grade will be based on completion of Pilates requirements. You will receive an independent grade for each unit and they will be averaged together. Student Responsibilities Come to class in the proper exercise attire. May vary based on module. Please note: muddy, snowy, salty shoes damage fitness flooring and equipment. Please change shoes prior to entering the fitness facilities. Students will be responsible for cleaning equipment after use. No food, drink, or smoking is permitted in the space. Since we work on movement, please, NO GUM. If you smoke, do not wear your smoking clothes into class and do not wear perfume as many people have sensitivities to scents and smoke. When we are working and sweating in close proximity this is important. Also, make sure you launder your exercise clothing frequently. Arrive ready for class. You may change in the locker rooms in Trees. Please do not use the studio rest room for changing. It is helpful if long hair is pulled back and kept from falling in the face. Also, rings, bracelets and necklaces can impede some poses - that will be left for you to decide. NO caps or hats of any kind should be worn in class.

4 Please turn off cellular phones during class time and do NOT bring your phone onto the floor. Keep water bottles off the dance studio floor. Take care of necessary business before you come to class. We are in class for two hours and you should be able to stay the requisite time without having to leave the classroom. It is also distracting to students to have people moving around in all parts of the class. However, if you have an emergency there is a bathroom you may use in the Dance Studio. If you are ill, be sure to bring tissues and cough drops if you need to. Students are not permitted into the fitness facilities and are not permitted to begin using equipment or enter the pool (if applicable) until the instructor is present and has prompted the start of the class. Students are required to participate in the entire length of the class. Notify the instructor immediately if an accident or injury occurs during class. Grading Attendance is required. You will receive a daily grade for participation. Taking and passing all tests and demonstrations is required. Important Dates Martin Luther King Holiday: January 15, No classes Spring Break Week: March 4-11, No classes Class Changeover: March 12 (begin yoga unit) University Policies Students in this course will be expected to comply with the University of Pittsburgh's Policy on Academic Integrity. Any student suspected of violating this obligation for any reason during the semester will be required to participate in the procedural process, initiated at the instructor level, as outlined in the University Guidelines on Academic Integrity. This may include, but is not limited to, the confiscation of the examination of any individual suspected of violating University Policy. Furthermore, no student may bring any unauthorized materials to an exam, including dictionaries and programmable calculators. If a student feels that they have been treated unfairly by the instructor with regard to their grade or other aspects of their course participation there are a series of steps that should be taken in an attempt to resolve this matter. These include the following: 1. The student should first inform the instructor of the course of the issue in an attempt to resolve this matter. If the course is taught by a Teaching Assistant, Graduate Student, or Part-Time instructor, their faculty supervisor should also be informed of this matter. The student should bring this issue to the attention of the instructor in a timely matter and should maintain a record of interactions that occurred with the instructor regarding the matter in question. The course instructor should take necessary steps to address the concern raised by the student in a timely matter and should maintain a record of the interactions that occurred with the student regarding this matter. 2. If, after reasonable attempts to resolve the matter, the matter is not resolved in a manner that is deemed to be acceptable to the student, the student retains the right to file a grievance. This grievance is to be filed with the Department Chair in the form of a written document that can be submitted via or campus mail. This document should include the following: a. Student s name b. Student contact information ( , address, telephone number) c. Information on the course for which the grievance applies (course title, course number, instructor name). d. A copy of the course syllabus that was provided to the student by the instructor e. Detailed description of the grievance and additional information the student feels is pertinent to this matter. After receiving this information the Department Chair will inform the student if additional information is needed, as appropriate will discuss this matter with the student and the instructor, and will issue a decision in a timely manner. 3. If the student is not willing to accept the decision of the Department Chair, the student will be informed that they can request an additional review of this matter through the Office of the Dean of the School of Education. If the student decides to pursue this, the student should contact the Associate Dean for Student Affairs & Certification in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh.
