Morgenthal, Dirks, Sermeno, Bates, Wanlass, Hamilton Teaching Assistants: To be announced COURSE PURPOSE Course Description: This laboratory and lecture course focuses on soft tissue management procedures, which are complementary to the chiropractic adjustment. Some of the therapeutic that are explored include post-isometric relaxation, post-contraction stretch, reciprocal inhibition, transverse cross friction massage, and trigger point pressure release. Specialized mobilization are presented and practiced. Emphasis in lab is placed on skills development and application of treatment procedures. The lecture series focuses on the history and scientific basis for the soft tissue that are taught.
2 DC Program Learning Outcomes: Assessment & Diagnosis o The graduate will utilize appropriate clinical reasoning skills to accurately assess and diagnose patient conditions. (Objectives 1, 3) Communication and Record Keeping o The graduate will communicate professionally. (Objectives 1, 4, 5) Chiropractic Adjustment/Manipulation o The graduate will be able to deliver appropriate, safe, and effective chiropractic manipulation. (Objective 4) Interprofessional Education and Collaboration o The graduate will have the skills to coordinate and collaborate with other healthcare professionals as a member of an inter-professional healthcare team to plan and manage patient-centered care. (Objectives 1, 2, 3) Foundational Health Science Knowledge o The graduate will develop and apply a foundation of biological science knowledge to build professional competence. (Objectives 1, 3) Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, a successful student should be able to: 1. Identify and distinguish the anatomical, physiological and neurological implications of various soft tissue procedures. 2. Identify and distinguish the indications and contraindications of various soft tissue procedures. 3. Assess and identify the diagnostic criteria of various soft tissue impediments and lesions. 4. Demonstrate, on a practical examination, various soft tissue procedures. 5. Formulate and explain a patient-education statement regarding various soft tissue procedures. The following page is a SAMPLE schedule of topics and exam dates. Please note that quizzes (both practical and written) may be unannounced, and thus are not included on this schedule. The course schedule is subject to change at the instructor s discretion to meet the course objectives. Class Lab Notes, including CP1 & CP2 lab manuals (available for download on ) 2. Patient gown and appropriate lab attire 3. 2 Towels (bath-sized) 4. Assigned weekly articles accessible for discussion during corresponding lecture (digital or print) 5. Bound or spiral notebook to use for lab documentation of cause and effect Provided Materials: Provided CP03 instructional can be found on. Technique-specific materials will be provided as necessary. Required Attire: REQUIRED CLINICAL LABORATORY ATTIRE: In order to maintain professional decorum and satisfy OSHA cleanliness guidelines, all students must wear patient-style gowns in all Chiropractic Procedures laboratory classes. Gowns are to be worn during any laboratory activity, including exams. Men should wear a gown with no shirt underneath and shorts or athletic pants (sweat pants). Women should wear a swimsuit top or sports bra under the gown and shorts, yoga pants, or athletic pants (sweat pants). No jeans or belts are allowed on the adjusting tables. Additionally, the adjusting tables shall be cleaned with the approved cleaner supplied in the J building, and the table shall be covered with a clean towel and the headpiece covered with face paper. Students not present and properly dressed for lab at the start of class will be considered absent. TEACHING METHODS AND ACTIVITIES Lecture/Concepts: Students will be responsible for accessing, downloading and reviewing the material prior to each lecture. Students must complete an online quiz after each lecture. Attendance is mandatory for any in-class lecture/meeting. Lab/Skills/Clinical application: Classes are taught in laboratory format centered on demonstration and small group guided practice. The small subgroups have instructors to maximize individual instruction. Assorted teaching are used including one-on-one and group instruction. Students will be guided to self-discovery through higher-order thinking tasks such as problem-based learning using analysis, synthesis, and evaluation and will participate in cooperative learning and active learning activities. Assigned projects assure adequate practice of taught outside of class hours. Required will be posted periodically on. Students are advised to attend open labs to practice the procedures presented in class. 4
5 EVALUATION OF STUDENT LEARNING Grading procedures: All information and skills developed during the course are cumulative and subject to examination on subsequent assessments. It should be noted that students who are absent or arrive late for an examination WILL NOT be allowed to take the examination; and will be scheduled for a make-up exam upon request within one week ONLY if excused by the Dean s office. Student assessments may include self-assessments, peer assessments, and instructor assessments. The format of these assessments may include multiple choice, essay, short answer, or fill-in examinations; special individual or group projects; or practical examinations, etc. Embedded assessments such as ICE or ACE examinations, critical thinking examinations, etc. may also be considered in the determination of the student s final grade and/or passing of the course. Grading Information The written and practical portions of the course must both be independently passed with a 70% to pass the course. Due to limitations in the software on, the Final Grade or aggregate grade displayed on is to be ignored. Instead, the Lab/Skills/Practical and Lecture/Concepts/Written Unit scores are utilized to determine pass/fail status. If both units are passed independently, the Final Grade applies. If one or both Unit scores are <70%, the Final Grade will be F for the entire course. The practical final examination must be passed with a 70% to pass the course. Ten percent will be deducted from any practical assessment for which the student doctor is not appropriately dressed or exhibits unprofessional behavior. Students must participate in lab activities and practical examinations unless red-flagged for participation through the Whittier Health Center. Practical Assessments: 60% (Skills/Application) Written Assessments: 40% (Reading/Lecture) Assessment Lab Grade Weight % Assessment Lecture Grade Weight % In-Class Assignments 5% Clinical Understanding Project 5% Skills Quizzes (may be unannounced; 8% Concepts Quizzes, may be unannounced 8% lowest quiz score will be dropped) Practical Midterm (week 7 or 8) 20% Written Midterm (week 7 or 8) 12% Practical Final (week 14) 27% Written Final (week 15) 15% Total Practical Assessments 60% Total Written Assessments 40% Test review policy: Any review for examinations, quizzes, or other evaluation tools must be completed within 2 weeks of the notification of scores. Late or Make-up Assessments/Assignments Late assignments will not be accepted. Make up skills quizzes will not be given for any reason because the lowest score will be dropped. All other make-up work requires the absence to be excused by the Dean. Written and Practical portion of class must both be independently passed with a minimum of 70%. Grading Scale: Letter grades will be only at the end of the trimester. A = 90% to 100% B = 80% - less than 89.9% C = 70% - less than 79.9% F = less than 70.0% *Note: There is no D grade in this course, except in the instance of F challenge. 5
6 PRINCIPLES & PRACTICE DEPARTMENT LABORATORY ATTENDANCE POLICY 1. Students must be appropriately attired and equipped to be considered present in lab. 2. Students who arrive 10 minutes late for a laboratory class will be marked absent for that attendance hour. When arriving late, it is the student s responsibility to notify the small group instructor so the exact time of arrival can be documented. 3. Students who arrive late but remain for the second hour will be given credit for the second hour of lab. 4. When a student reaches 10% absence in a laboratory class, excused or unexcused, and is notified either by the instructor or Dean s Office, they will be required to make up any additional hours missed by attending Open Lab sessions at a rate of two hours of Open Lab for each hour of missed laboratory class time. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the lead instructor to arrange make up hours. The make up time must be documented and reported to the lead instructor on a schedule to be determined by the instructor. 5. Students who exceed 15% absence, excused or unexcused, may be dropped from the course per university policy. UNIVERSITY POLICIES Students are expected to spend at least two hours for each lecture or practicum hour and one hour for every two laboratory hours of course time per week in activities and assessments outside the classroom. Examples of activities include, but are not limited to: writing papers; reading articles or text; small group work; presentations; completing assignments; preparation for assessments; online activities and other activities that do not include direct instructor interaction and involvement.
