Special Materials: All materials, supplies, and equipment will be provided except for a towel and water bottle, which are required that you bring with you to each class. Stretching mats are available for use during class. You can also bring your own mat to work out on and to stretch. This is optional. These Yoga type roll-up mats are available at retail outlets starting at about $ There is a greater selection of higher quality mats on-line. Class Focus: This course covers the teaching of contemporary fitness concepts as they pertain to the individual student; the teaching of scientific information concerning values and the preventive medical benefits of exercise; the teaching of experiments to determine individual (personal) health levels; and the development of a personal exercise program based on the students needs. We will have futures generative dialogues related to concepts of lifestyle issues relative to social, cultural, and ethnic concerns. About your instructor Bart J. Desender My family has lived in the area of where Belgium, Europe, is currently located, for at least 500years (Cannot trace them any further). I am a first generation American and came here when I was 18 years old to go to college. I have lived here ever since. I swam varsity for TCU and I am a former IFBB National Bodybuilding Champion of Belgium. I was the personal trainer for celebrities like Paula Abdul and Dr. Phil while I was a Fitness Manager at the Four Seasons Resort in Las Colinas. I also taught group exercise classes for 24Hr Fitness for two years. 2 Class Requirements: Attendance and participation are crucial for this activity class. Each class will have new exercises and workouts, which will become progressively more difficult as the semester progresses. Only 2 classes can be missed, so it is very important that you ATTEND and PARTICIPATE in each class. Mandatory Attendance Policy Regular and punctual class attendance is expected at Tarrant County College. Student absences will be recorded from the first day the class meets. In case of absence, it is the students responsibility to contact the instructor. Students absent on official school business are entitled to make up coursework missed. In all other cases, the instructor will judge whether the student will be permitted to make up work and will decide on the time and nature of the makeup. However, the student is expressly responsible for any work missed regardless of the cause of the absence. The student must discuss such work with the instructor and should do so immediately on returning to school. Communication between the student and instructor is most important, and it is the students responsibility to initiate such communication. If students do not appear at the prearranged time or meet the prescribed deadline for makeup work, they forfeit their rights for further makeup of that work. Students who stop attending class for any reason should contact the instructor and the Registrars office to officially withdraw from the class. Failure to officially withdraw may result in a failing grade for the course. Class attendance and participation are essential to student success. Effective with the Spring 2012 term, the following attendance guidelines will apply: A student in an on-campus course missing a cumulative of 15 percent of the class meetings and not keeping up with the course assignments may be dropped at the discretion of the instructor. A student in an online course is required to successfully complete the online course orientation and actively participate in the course as described in the Instructors Course Requirements (ICRs). A student not meeting these requirements may be dropped at the discretion of the instructor. 5 Additional Class Information: NOTE Textbook chapters will not be covered in numerical order as printed in the book. Our semester presentation will be as follows (check instructors web site for daily schedule): ATTIRE No dress or street clothes or shoes, no jeans, no cut-off shorts. Only proper workout attire will be allowed (t-shirt, tank top, collared shirts, sweats, tights, workout shorts or workout pants & tennis shoes in case we go outside). CAMPUS CARRY Effective August 1, 2017, the Campus Carry law (Senate Bill 11) allows those licensed individuals to carry a concealed handgun in buildings on public community college campuses, except in locations the College establishes as prohibited (e.g. our TCC NE NHPE/Kinesiology Recreation Center). Under the new law, openly carrying handguns is not allowed on college campuses.
