10 Introduction Why Get Fit? Engage in Activity, Engage in Health About 80 million Americans will turn 50 over the next ten years. Despite growing evidence that regular physical activity can help you stay healthy and live longer, the 50+ population is becoming less, rather than more, active. Poor diet and lack of exercise are known risk factors for developing illness and disabilities such as arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Most importantly, the benefits of physical activity are extensive and include increased energy, improved self-image, reduced stress, and maintaining the ability to live independently. Physical activity also reduces blood cholesterol and blood pressure, controls weight, and helps maintain healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Staying injury free! Warm up then stretch before exercising. Start slowly. Do not go full force at first. 10 Personality Fit 900 Laurel Street San Carlos, CA Phone: (650) Website: The Body Studio 346 North Ellsworth Avenue San Mateo, CA Phone: (650) Website: Golds Gym 1150 Park Place Avenue San Mateo, CA Phone: (650) Website: Physique Magnifique 387 Grand Avenue South San Francisco, CA Phone: (650) Website: Schoebers Athletic Club 425 Eccles Avenue South San Francisco, CA Phone: (650) Website: 71

Remember to slow down or stop if you feel pain, fatigue, or shortness of breath. Making it fun! There s no need to huff and puff and physical activity should not be painful. You can make it fun by exercising with your family or friends, playing with your kids or grandchildren, working in your garden, joining a league sport, or going dancing! Try different activities so you don t get bored. To stick with your physical activity goals, plan ahead and find activities that fit your lifestyle. Moderateintensity activity would be like walking one mile in 15 to 20 minutes. If you have a pre-existing condition, such as heart disease or diabetes, you should check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. The following questions can help you determine if you should see your doctor. 1. Has your doctor ever said that you have a heart condition and that you should only do physical activity recommended by a doctor? 2. Do you feel pain in your chest during physical activity? 3. In the past month, have you had chest pain when you were not doing physical activity? 68 13
14 4. Do you lose your balance because of dizziness or do you ever lose consciousness? 5. Do you have a bone or joint problem that could be made worse by a change in your physical activity? 6. Is your doctor currently prescribing drugs (for example, water pills) for your blood pressure or a heart condition? 7. Do you know of any other reason why you should not do physical activity? If you answered YES to one or more questions, talk with your doctor before becoming more physically active. If you answered NO to all questions, then you can be reasonably sure that you can safely start a gradually increasing exercise program. If you are currently not feeling well because of a temporary illness such as a cold or fever, delay the start of your exercise program until you feel better. III. Questions to ask the club staff: How long has the club been in business? How does club management deal with overcrowding? (Do they place a ceiling on memberships, have a waiting list, or have restricted-hours membership?) How does the club solicit the opinion of members? What is the guest policy? Is the membership transferable to another person? Does the membership give you access to any other clubs? Do any services cost extra? (e.g. child care or one-on-one training) What are the educational background and training of staff? (Individuals with a degree in exercise physiology or physical education should be on staff. Exercise instructors should be certified.) Do they have exercise programs specifically for older adults? 14 67
15 Things to Consider Before Joining a Health Club I. What to look for when you visit a club: Is it crowded? (Visit during the peak hours and when you expect to use it.) Are people waiting in line to use the equipment? Is any the equipment broken? Is the equipment clean? Does it look fairly new? Is there enough room to work out? Are staff available to explain how to use machines and how to exercise properly? Would you feel comfortable working out here or do the members intimidate you? Are locker rooms and showers clean? Are towels, soap, etc. provided? II. Questions to ask members: Would you recommend the club to a friend? Do you plan to renew your membership? How often do you use the club? It concentrates its grant making in four goal areas: to assure that all Americans have access to basic health care at reasonable cost; to improve care and support for people with chronic health conditions; to promote healthy communities and lifestyles; and to reduce the personal, social and economic harm caused by substance abuse -- tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. The Texas A&M University System Health Science Center, School of Rural Public Health in College Station, TX is the first school of public health to focus on the often-unique health issues and needs of rural populations. 17 of different routes so that you can vary your walks. Maybe you want to include a walk with some hills. Try to avoid areas with lots of traffic, dangerous intersections, parking lots, or no sidewalks. On your way Remember to keep things simple when you're just starting your club. Decide on your fitness goals, where and on what days you'll meet, and how long you'll walk. You should aim for 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week. You can start out walking more slowly if 30 minutes seems like too much to do at first. Or, you can break your 30 minutes into two 15-minute walks, or even three 10-minute walks. This approach also allows you to accumulate your 30 minutes if you are pressed for time. If club members become really enthusiastic as you progress, you might want to add more structure to your club. For instance, you can hold periodic meetings and plan to participate as a group in a community walking event. Once you've identified your club's members, set goals. How many miles do you want to walk each week and each time you meet? Do you want to walk for an hour, a half-hour? Is one of your goals to lose weight? Do you want to train for a walk-a-thon? What are the ground rules? The club should have some basic rules that everyone can live with. For instance, will the club still meet if the weather is bad? Will there be a designated alternative meeting place, such as an indoor mall? Will a club member call other club members to let them know if he or she can't walk on a particular day? Do members want to limit walking times to daylight hours? Will you all agree to leave cell phones and "walkmen" at home? Where will you walk? Designate geographic boundaries for your walking routes. Are members willing to drive to a meeting place? How far? Are there certain parks or neighborhoods with scenic walking trails or sidewalks? Identify a number BRISBANE 18 63
19 at work during the day, you might want to speak with co-workers who are active or interested in becoming active. Maybe you're home during the day and know others who would be able to walk with you. How big do you want the group to be? A smaller group, two to four people, is easier to coordinate and walk with. With a somewhat larger group you are more likely to find a walking partner who is available when you are. If your club starts out small and just keeps growing, you can always break into smaller groups based on people's fitness levels and availability. However, it is easiest to start out with members who are at similar fitness levels and whose schedules are compatible. Having trouble recruiting potential members? Try posting a flyer on a public bulletin board. Your local library, YMCA, grocery store, or recreation center might have one available. Include a telephone number where new recruits can contact you or designate a public place and time for a planning meeting. 62 Burlingame Parks and Recreation 850 Burlingame Avenue Burlingame, CA Phone: (650) Website: Hours: M-Th 8am-8pm F 8am-5pm Sat 8am-10:30am Language(s): English Yoga Yes $$ Tai Chi Yes $$ * Stretching & Balance Yes $$ * Strength Training Yes $$ Aerobic Exercise Yes $$ Water Aerobics Yes $$ * Dancing Yes $$ * Walking Yes FREE Health Screening No * Discounts for individuals age 65 and over available, call for details. You have decided to form a walking club! Your decision to start a walking club already shows you are committed to a walking program. Walking with others is key to help you stick with it. It is a great way to make walking fun, alleviate boredom, and stay safe. Your walking club might simply consist of a couple of friends, neighbors, or co-workers who meet regularly to walk, or it could be something more formal. It all depends on how much time and energy you have to plan and organize. However you decide to structure your club, remember that your primary goal is to get out and get walking. Getting started First you need to identify who might be interested in joining a walking club. When do you plan to walk? If it is before or after work you might want to call some friends who live in your community or neighborhood. If you're DALY CITY 20 61
