2 Purpose of the Directory This directory is intended to provide a list of smoking cessation resources offered in San Mateo County for smokers, health care providers, and friends or family members of smokers. We have attempted to include a wide range of options for people attempting to quit including: cessation classes, support groups, hypnosis, acupuncture, and Internet resources. However, inclusion in this directory does not imply endorsement. Techniques that may work for one person may not work for another. Trained counselors provide information on how to kick the habit and stay tobacco free. Counseling is available in multiple languages. Hotline hours are M-F 9am to 9pm and Sat. 9am to 1pm. This 8 session course includes information about: behaviors and triggers associated with nicotine use, skills needed to make and maintain lifestyle changes, ways to develop support systems and coping strategies, weight gain issues, relaxation/stress reduction techniques, and relapse prevention skills. Classes are taught by experienced instructors trained in the quitting process. 8 Program Name: Tobacco Free Project Stop Smoking Program Organization: San Francisco General Hospital Contact: Darlene Bahrs Address: 1001 Potrero, Bldg 30, Room 206 San Francisco, CA The San Francisco General Hospital Stop Smoking Program offers a behavioral, cognitive change approach to smoking cessation. Interested smokers should attend a monthly orientation session where program staff will assess the smokers needs and direct them to the most appropriate cessation forum. The program sponsors support groups, one-on-one sessions with a cessation provider, group cessation classes, and referrals to the California Smokers' Help-line. 9 Program Name: Smoke Free Start for Families Organization: County of San Mateo Health Services Agency Contact: Sheila Ramos, MPH Address: th Ave. San Mateo, CA This is a comprehensive program developed to address the cessation needs of pregnant and postpartum women and their family members living in San Mateo County. Trained cessation specialists provide linguistically and culturally appropriate one-on-one smoking cessation services and/or smoking reduction education. The program also offers services to pregnant and postpartum women who have self-quit in order to prevent relapse. Individual and group counseling is also available for families members living with children 0-5 years of age. 11 Internet Resources Program Name: Freedom Program Organization: Web Address: This is an online smoking cessation program consisting of 18 daily sessions. Each session deals with a different aspect of smoking. Initial sessions focus on powerful and effective methods that ease the transition to becoming a non- smoker. The second section provides support during the first 90 days after quitting. Cost: $79 21

In addition, a weekly support group is available online

13 Program Name: The No Smoke Cafe Organization: N/A Web Address: Program Name: Organization: Web Address: American Lung Association The No Smoke Café, operated by former smokers, is an online support group and information site for people thinking of quitting, in the process of quitting, or trying to remain smoke-free. The site includes online chat groups and advice on quitting from a cessation specialist. The American Lung Association has created their own website containing a wealth of information. Topics include the health effects of tobacco, information about their stop smoking programs and self-help materials, data and statistics about smoking, general information about the organization and much more
