1 Why Is This Important??? Tennis elbow, shoulder tendonitis, low back pain, knee pain, Achilles pain, shin splints.the list can go on!! None of them are good and they will all keep you off the tennis court. Tennis is a sport that we all love but it presents several challenges to athletes who strive to maintain a high activity level. We d like to take a minute and discuss a few things that will explain why joining our Concierge Sports Medicine Program is the right thing for you. On-Call Injury Evaluation Same Day Did you wake up with a stiff neck? Is that knee pain after playing tennis still nagging you? Are you unable to sleep because your shoulder constantly reminds you that it s still there and it s not happy?! Did you roll your ankle on the tennis court 10 minutes ago and it continues to just get worse?? These are the EXACT reasons why our Concierge Sports Medicine Program is the right choice for you. You will be given Randi s cell phone number and so that you have direct access to her for anything that you would like to discuss. Imagine this scenario...the score is 5-5 in the last set and you would like to avoid the tiebreaker at all costs so you are running down every possible shot. Your opponent hits a mediocre lob shot that you know you can track down so you turn and pivot and POW!!! You find yourself face down on the court with a very unpleasant and very sharp pain in your knee (or back, or ankle etc). There are 1000 thoughts racing through your head starting with What happened? and What did I just do to myself? Followed by Well, now what am I supposed to do? This is where the Concierge Sports Medicine Program comes in. Being on-site at EHIT, we are available from 12:30 to 7pm SAME DAY to assess your injury and provide answers to your many questions. We will also treat you right there to make you as comfortable as possible while we discuss your options on how to proceed. There are many things that you can do in the hours following an injury that will help minimize the severity, and a few that unfortunately can make it worse. We hear these questions every day: Do I ice it or heat it? Should I put a pillow under it? How should I sleep? Should I take a pain-killer? How do I wrap it? How do I use these crutches? What doctor do I go see? What if he/she doesn t take my insurance?? How long will it be before I can even get an appointment?? These are the questions that we will answer to put your mind at ease!!!! Injuries can be tricky as they often present differently after the first 24 hours. Sometimes it s just a muscle spasm in your back that prevents you from taking a deep breath even though it feels like you will never fully inhale ever again!! A day or 2 of treatment, on-site, may be all it takes to get you back in the game. Other times, your injury may be serious enough to warrant seeing an orthopedist. Either way we will expedite the process for you. Our network of local doctors and orthopedic specialists are extremely accommodating in getting you an appointment as quickly as possible. If you would prefer to see your personal doctor we can set that up for you as well. We will also arrange for you to be seen at EHIT the following day for a 2nd treatment and to re-evaluate your injury.
2 Postural Assessment First, tennis is a predominantly one-sided sport: you serve right handed, you hit a forehand right handed, you hit a backhand right handed, etc. That one-sided dominance leads to significantly higher strength on one side of your body compared to the other resulting in an unbalance. Overall, when strength, impact, flexibility, and general stress from a sport are unbalanced your body will eventually break down and that is when you will experience pain and injury. Second, tennis is a game of perpetual stop and go, where you use every muscle in your body to change direction in a split second and then go at a full sprint in the opposite direction. Repeated stop and go activity puts a massive amount of strain on your muscles and joints and can lead to fatigue. If your body is not in the proper alignment to start with, because of inadequate arch support in your shoes or poor muscle flexibility, that fatigue will set in earlier. When your muscles are tired they respond slower and less efficiently to the demands that you put on them, setting up the perfect scenario for every tennis player s nightmare - tendonitis. There is a not-so-secret term used in sports, and sports medicine alike, called the kinetic chain. Going back to the whole Everything you ever needed to know you learned in kindergarten thing, the kinetic chain is simply this: the ankle bone is connected to the knee bone, the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone is connected to the pelvic bone, etc. The kinetic chain begins at the bottom of your feet and ends at the top of your head (or the top of your racket if that s higher!). Athletes who possess the perfect kinetic chain are very healthy and highly successful, but those of us who have a rusty, old, recently-turned-40 chain (me!) are less so. I m referring to things like flat feet, knock knees, poor abdominal muscle strength, and rounded shoulders just to name a few. Your body can be viewed as a house of cards if one card falls out of correct position then nothing above it will do its job well. At Sports Therapy, we address the kinetic chain with 100% of our clients every day - Let us get you into the proper alignment so your body doesn t break down!! We will perform a thorough, digital postural analysis and movement screen and review it with you right there. We will also give you a comprehensive home exercise program designed to address any limitations that your analysis revealed. Come back in 4 weeks and we will repeat the screenings to see what improvements you have made. Your home program can be adjusted to further your progress at this time. (Screening reports and home exercise programs will be ed to you in PDFs for your records)
3 Performance and Kinesio-Taping These days you can t turn on the television to tune into any tennis tournament and not see one athlete that isn t covered in crazy colored, randomly placed tape. Djokovic. Serena. Nadal. There is a reason for this...it WORKS!!! Ask Matt or Fabio or Lisa or Brian or any of your other favorite pros at EHIT - when they are on the court teaching for 8 hours a day performance taping has helped their bodies hold up! Kineso Tape has been around since the late 1970 s and it has a solid foundation of evidenced-based research attesting to its effectiveness. It is completely safe and effective for 3-5 days regardless of water or sweat. Have you ever tried to tape yourself and didn t really feel anything different?? That s because performance taping in an extremely intricate process based on proper body positioning, proper muscle length and direction, and proper % stretch on the tape itself. It may seem haphazardly thrown on but there is a very real logic behind why it is there. Randi has been a Certified Kinesio Taping Practitioner for several years now and can easily show you how the benefits of performance taping can assist you in your tennis game. Her team will perform a screening of how your joints and muscles are moving to determine how best to tape you up - for the ENTIRE summer!! Nutrition Counseling - 2 sessions Everyone needs energy to get through their day, but athletes need the right kind of energy to keep participating at a high-performance level. Let our qualified nutritionists help make sure that the foods you are eating are the right ones to keep you on the court. At your initial counseling session, your nutritionist will ask many questions about your daily habits and meal plans, hydration, sleep, your medical history and most importantly your goals. Honesty is extremely important, and our staff will NEVER judge your answers. Body weight, BMI and body composition can be assessed at this time if you are interested in knowing that information it is NOT required. You and your nutritionist will work together to formulate a plan to achieve your goals. At your follow up counseling session, 4-8 weeks later, you and your nutritionist will discuss how your plan is progressing and if any changes are required. Body weight, BMI and body composition can be reassessed at this time to determine your progress if you choose to do so.
4 At Sports Therapy, we believe in providing the highest quality of care for you and we are incredibly excited to bring our experience to East Hampton Indoor Tennis. Our staff has extensive knowledge, experience and training to provide a comprehensive and individualized plan to address the whole you. Dr. Joshua Dines of Hospital for Special Surgery said it best - Prevention programs that address muscular imbalances throughout the kinetic chain may help reduce injuries experienced by many tennis players. This is what the Concierge Sports Medicine Program at EHIT is all about. We want you on the court, so let us help you stay there. Randi Cherill MSPT, ATC, CSCS, CKTP Randi is the owner and head physical therapist at Sports Therapy. She is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, earned her BS in Athletic Training and Exercise Science from Ithaca College and went on to receive her Masters of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL.
