Q: How can Sports Massage benefit athletes who are training for specific athletic events? On the day of your athletic event there are three types of massage that can be beneficial to you and your performance. Pre Event Massage - This is a brief massage lasting approximately 15 minutes. Your massage therapists will use compression to increase blood flow and firm massage strokes to both warm and energize the muscles. Athletes often use this time to focus on the upcoming event and visualize the outcome. Inter Event Massage For elite athletes that have a long and strenuous event, you could request your therapist to attend the event so that you can have inter event care. This targets specific muscle groups affected by the demands of the day s event. Post Event Massage - Your massage therapist will use slow compression strokes to bring blood and oxygen to tense muscles, to ease soreness and to help flush out metabolic wastes. This massage will also help to assess any structural imbalances or any injuries that may have occurred during the event. This massage lasts approximately 15 to 20 minutes and is intended to begin the process of relieving muscle pain and soreness. Q: How often should I have a Sports Massage? Elite athletes should have a Sports Massage twice a week. Keeping your body flushed of metabolic waste and proper care of your muscle will enable you to perform at your optimal level. Recreational athletes should seek a Sports Massage once a week to once a month based on your need and level of activity. For all athletes Sports Massage is important before and after participating in athletic events.
