1 Athlete of the Month: Rosie Hunter By Rosie Hunter January 2015 How did you discover CrossFit and or why did you decide to give it a go? I think everyone who knows me was a bit surprised when I decided to do CrossFit...I've never in my life been a 'fit' person, or a 'fast' person, and definitely not a 'strong' person! But secretly I've always wanted to be :) Before I started, my goal was to lose weight, but from the very first on-ramp session, I kinda forgot about that goal and instead became obsessed about beating my baseline score. And it's still the most addictive part...trying to always lift heavier, run faster. ((Even though I probably have lost weight, all that means now is I'm closer to being able to back squat my body weight!)) What were you doing sport/exercise wise before CrossFit? Before CrossFit I used to...read? Does that count? I haven't really done proper sport since I was at uni. Favourite CrossFit exercise? I secretly love all the oly lifting! That was always the part of CrossFit that kind of turned me off, but surprisingly it's my favourite part now! Most hated CrossFit exercise? I'm pretty rats at all gymnastic movements like pull-ups and toes to bar, but I remember before I started on-ramp I could never do a push up...that was something only strong people could do...and after a couple of months of CrossFit I finally did one - a proper push-up with no knees! So now the pull-up is my new goal - that's something only strong people can do :) 1 P age

2 What changes in your health and performance have you observed since starting CrossFit? I can finally do a push up! Also, I have more energy which is weird...being a solo parent is sometimes physically hard - no one to share jobs with, or help carry Otto, move furniture, open jars...there's still a lot I can't do, but being a bit stronger makes everything a bit easier :) What is one word that people use to describe you? Stubborn. (I like to think they mean it in a good way) What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit? I have told so many people that they need some CrossFit in their lives! Apart from all the health and physical reasons, the CFEA family are so, so awesome...when I was signing up Aaron was saying the community is like a family and really friendly and helpful...i remember thinking yeah it probably is - for the cool kids and outgoing kids, but not for awkward people like me...i was so ready just to turn up, do the training and go home again, but everyone really is so friendly and helpful and I've made heaps of friends! You'd never get that from joining the gym, or just going running. Something nobody knows about you or would be surprised to know about you? I speak Brazilian Portuguese. I used to work for a non-profit in the Northeast of Brazil, and a lot of the work we did was in favelas...so at first I picked up a really ghetto version of Portuguese and had to spend a lot of time refining it...brazilians still have a laugh at my accent though, so don't know how successful that was. Favorite activity outside of CrossFit? Reading haha...nerd for life! Favorite place to eat a Paleo-ish meal in Auckland? I struggle with this...it's usually easy to find a place that has some good paleo options (or at least some good meat/vegetable options)...but it's a lot harder to not order the pizza. Me and my sister are trying to cook a lot more Paleo-ish, and that's quite fun. The song that gets you pumped up for a workout? One of the coaches (can't remember who, but you're awesome) plays a lot of old 90's rock like Good Charlotte and Cake and Sublime...those are always good days :) The last thing you ate? A chicken salad with spinach, carrot, cabbage, apple, egg, and other random leftovers...it was pretty delicious actually. Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit? Finally doing push ups was cool :) Also when I did a 50kg front squat - to me that's a lot! And I felt good all day after that. 2 P age

3 What are your goals for 2015? I want to learn double unders, toes-tobar and pull-ups. That's doable right?! Which CFEA member inspires you the most? Oh man - every member who I've ever trained with! Tania she always tests the limits...i think all my PBs have happened on days when Tania says "That looks good...but you can probably go heavier!" Deirdre - it's my goal to beat her in a run one day, probably in the very distant future. Anna - she always smiles during the WODs (I don't know how), Edwine and Kavita - I don't think there's anything they can't do. 4 Rosie you have certainly struck a chord with many of us and I know there is way more positivity coming your way. However here s a few comments from us coaches Such a genuine and lovely person and it's always a pleasure to have her in my sessions when I do get the chance. She seems very dedicated to improving herself and is always taking everything on board in any way she can, as well as enjoying herself. I've been impressed by how much she's been improving in such a short space of time. Rosie's definitely an undercover ninja! Definitely a bit of a silent assassin. Hasn't taken long for her to get the technique of oly lifting and now that she has, she's lifting some decent weights. She's really fit as well. Hard worker and genuinely lovely human. She has amazing guns! Has anyone else noticed?! Rosie is such a sweet, kind lady, listens, works hard, super respectful and making awesome progress. Very humble too. She donated a massive bag of stuff from her pharmacy for kids in need-just another side of her beautiful soul. I remember Rosie's first day at on-ramp, she struggled with the warm up and needed a few minutes to sit down to gather herself, but I was impressed at how she pushed through the session. I'm blown away by how much she's improved now, especially over such a short period. She always gives 100%, and is a super nice human being. Rosie, just go on being who you are, because we all agree, you re nailing it! 4 P age
