1 KIN Physical Fitness & Conditioning Course Syllabus Summer 2014 Instructor: Tyanez Jones, MA Office: 223 Forker Bldg tcjones@iastate.edu Textbook/Clicker: Concepts of Physical Fitness, 17th edition (Corbin, Welk, Corbin, & Welk) Turning Point Clickers Catalog Description: This course will provide students with a background of physical activity, fitness, and various health-related outcomes. Students will develop personal fitness using a variety of conditioning and exercise techniques such as aerobics, weight training, and aquatic fitness. This course is an introduction to acute and chronic responses to exercise, and the role of exercise in health promotion and weight management Learning objectives: This is an introductory course to Fitness and Condition. At the completion of this course each student will be able to meet the following student learning objectives: Student Learning Outcome: Content Knowledge Evaluate physical fitness by participating in group fitness classes, weight training, aquatic fitness, walking, jogging, and group sport activities. Develop understanding for various exercise and fitness principles. As well as develop a plan to track daily exercise. Acquire a basic understanding of physical activity and exercise physiology. Discuss the role of moderate levels of physical activity and exercise in the prevention and treatment of human disease. Student Learning Outcome: Discovery and Critical Thinking Design an individualized exercise prescription using the FITT Principle. Evaluate and implement various fitness concepts to promote progression. Student Learning Outcome: Communication/Diversity Understand and implement how to function in teams within diverse groups Demonstrate and evaluate proper exercise technique. Discuss the role of genetics and heredity on level of physical activity and performance Student Learning Outcome: Numeracy

2 Understand and calculate formulas and percentages for exercise prescription design. Interpret baseline numbers for Heart rate and Blood pressure during rest and exercise. Student Learning Outcome: Technology Use BB learn Journals to create and submit exercise logs Use the Internet to explore related course materials The class will consist of lecture, discussion, small group activities and assessments. Come to class prepared to participate, having read the required materials. Course Format: KIN 258 will meet five days a week and include 50 minute lecture and 50 minute activity labs (279 Forker; Forker 194). The lecture component will provide concepts to build student knowledge for improving personal fitness. Lab sessions will give students an opportunity to actively demonstrate concepts learned, make assessments, and accumulate data to complete lab assignments. Evaluation: Written Exams (3- exams- 50 points each & 1- comprehensive final- 100 points) 20 - Lecture Participation 50 - Lab Attendance 15 - Lab Assignments 40 - Lab Quizzes (BB learn) 25 - Exercise Logs 400 points Grading Scale: 93% and above A % C A % C % B % D % B % D % B % D % C+ 59.9% or below F Attendance Policy: Attendance is required for this course. Lecture participation points will be awarded based on completion of Turning Point clicker questions, in class and online assignments. You are allowed to miss one lecture of turning point clicker questions with no penalty. It is you re responsibility to make sure your Turning Point Clicker is working. Lab attendance will be taken daily. Each student is allowed one unexcused absence. Other unexcused absence will result in a 5-point deduction from lab participation points. There will be no make-ups for exams, in class assignments, or on-line quizzes. If you are unable to complete lab assessments (due to physical limitations etc.) contact your lab instructor immediately. Athletes, band members, athletic trainers, etc. need to see me the first week of

3 class about absences regarding University involvement. Weekly Concept Labs/ Other Assignments: Students are expected to complete labs assignments as listed on the syllabus. The assignments will be collected during lab. Students are expected to read concepts and complete course assignments outside of class. Exercise Log and Summary: Students will create SMART goals and an exercise plan based on specific fitness needs (examples found in lab 19C). Students will track and monitor their personal physical activity/exercise three times per week throughout the semester. The exercise log will include a report of fitness activities using the FITT principle. Students are required to submit five online (BB learn: Journals folder) submissions per week. Four log submissions should include fitness activities covered during the lab sections and one log submission can include any activity completed outside of lab. Weekly labs are due by Friday at midnight. Late logs will receive a grade of zero. Academic Dishonesty The class will follow Iowa State University s policy on academic dishonesty. Anyone suspected of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Students Office.
