2 HERBAL OIL INFUSIONS FIXED OILS for EXTRACTION: organic olive oil sesame oil almond oil (for skin care products) 2

3 DRY HERB EXTRACTIONS Simple Folk Method: 1. fill a ball jar with dried garbled herb 2. add oil, stir well, get all bubbles out, cap tightly 3. place jar in paper bag on window sill for 2-4 weeks, stir occasionally 4. strain and press 5. let stand for 2-3 days, allow floating plant articles to settle 6. decant 7. store in glass containers in cool place out of direct sunlight 3

4 DRY HERB EXTRACTIONS Digestion Method: 1. fill a ball jar with dried garbled herb, add oil, stir well, get all bubbles out 2. place jar in yoghurt maker, water bath, dehydrator below 120F, oven with heat of pilot light, cover lightly 3. extract for 2-5 days, stir occasionally 4. strain and press while oils is still warm 5. let stand for 2-3 days, allow floating plant articles to settle 6. decant 7. store in glass containers in cool place out of direct sunlight 4

5 DRY HERB EXTRACTIONS Ethyl-Oil Method: 1. for extraction of plants with mostly alcohol soluble constituents 2. fill a ball jar with 1 part dried garbled herb, 1 part 196 proof alcohol, seal tightly, macerate for 24 hours 3. measure 1 part alcohol/herb mix - 6 parts olive oil 4. pour oil and herb into a blender and blend at medium speed until blender container feels warm 5. strain and press through a cheese cloth 6. heat oil in double boiler at medium heat for a few hours until alcohol is evaporated 7. store in glass containers in cool place out of direct sunlight 5

6 FRESH HERB EXTRACTION 1. if herb has high moisture content (comfrey and plantain), wilt for 12 hours 2. fill a ball jar 3/4 with chopped up herbs, add fixed oil to very top, stir well, make note of smell 3. place jar in yoghurt maker, water bath, oven with heat of pilot light, dehydrator (below 120F), don t cover so moisture can escape, extract for two days, stir occasionally 4. cover jar and heat for another 4-6 days, smell daily, if fermentation takes place increase heat to 150F then reduce again, stir daily 5. strain and press, let stand for 4-5 days and allow remaining water to settle, decant 6. store in glass containers in cool place out of direct sunlight 6

22 SALVES & BALMS SALVE (Ointment): semi-solid fatty herbal oil - wax blend used topically, less messy than oils BALM: Salve with high content of volatile oils, released when applied to warm skin 22

23 HOW TO MAKE A BALM 1. blend desired herbal oils and add 1 oz of beeswax pellets per cup of oil 2. heat in double boiler until beeswax is melted 3. freeze test for consistency 4. optional: add essential oils 5. pour liquid into containers 6. let cool to harden 23

24 HEALING BALM RECIPE 1. disinfect all equipment (Decon-30) 2. combine and melt in double boiler: 4oz butter (shea, mango, kokum, cacao, ) 12oz herb infused oils (comfrey, plantain, yarrow, calendula, St.John s wort) 3 oz beeswax 3. let cool down a little 4. add essential oils: 70 drops lavender and 70 drops eucalyptus 5. add preservative: 1/2 tsp Vitamin E oil 24

44 NOURISHING & ANTI-INFLAMMATORY CREAM 1. Disinfect all equipment (Decon-30) 2. Combine water solubles and set aside 3. Combine oils and beeswax in double boiler and heat until beeswax is completely melted, let cool until oil starts to harden at the edges 4. Combine watery solution with warm oils and blend with an immersion blender to a creamy consistency 5. Add tinctures, nutritional agents, essential oils and preservatives. Blend again to a smooth and silky cream. 6. Fill containers with pastry bag. 44

46 SORE MUSCLE LINIMENT 1. Disinfect all equipment (Decon-30) 2. Combine all ingredients and stir well 3. Fill in containers with caps that withstand essential oils 46
