3 P a g e 1 Introduction to the Young Leaders Award The Young Leaders Award is a unique and exciting product which will equip your young people to be a force for good in their local community. The programme is available at Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 as well as Post-16. Feedback from the Awards has been overwhelmingly positive with Senior Leaders, Teachers, Parents and Learners all reporting amazing, meaningful opportunities for young people to serve their schools, communities and families. The Awards contribute greatly to Oftsed SMSC judgements, raise school profile with the community and local media and crucially give learners the opportunity to Be the Change they Want to See. See page 7 for testimonials or go to the section on our website dedicated to sharing good news stories The following pages will provide you with more information about the Key Stage 3 Award, further details can be found on our website at If you would like to speak to someone about the Awards, contact us at: The Archbishop of York Youth Trust Bishopthorpe Palace Bishopthorpe, York YO23 2GE yla@archbishopofyork.org telephone: The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 4 Key Stage 3 Award At A Glance Module 1: Faith (Guided Learning Hours: 10 classroom based) A total of ten exciting lessons looking at faith and leadership, great leaders and the role of charities in society. Module 2 Hope (GLH: 10 classroom and activity based) Ten inspirational lessons exploring hope, community and the positive difference young people can make in their local area. This module also includes a visit to a local community project and sees the students writing their own action plan for the community work they will do in the next module. Module 3 Action (GLH 5-10 learning & volunteering outside of the classroom) Group Community Project School Community Project As a group the young leaders decide on the work they would like to do in their community to bring about change. Examples from previous groups include: raising money for a local hospice, serving Christmas Dinner at a Drop In Centre, working with a local project to build a garden or running workshops with local primary school children. As a group the young leaders will need to decide on something which they can do to bring about change to the school community. Examples include painting a worn area of school, organising an interfaith day, school litter pick, raising funds for a school project or supporting new pupils in their transition to secondary school. Personal Volunteering Challenge Each young leader will need to do something individually which will serve the local community. Current examples include raising money for a local charity, working at a local food bank or coaching sports for younger children at a local sports club The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 5 P a g e 4 Framework Inspection links Content Explanatory Notes Ofsted Spiritual Through studying a number of people of faith who have helped change the world for the better, pupils reflect on how belief informs a person s perspective on life and how it can inspire them to action. Students continually learn about themselves through the award, identifying strengths and weaknesses and increasing their personal development as they grow in leadership skills through Archie s challenges. Pupils learn about their local community and the world around them and are encouraged to be creative and imaginative in the ways in which they complete Archie s challenges thinking about how they can serve their community and bring about change for the better. Through their evidence scrap book the students reflect on their experiences, in particular the active citizenship aspect of the award. Moral Social Through researching a number of people of faith and charitable organisations who stand up against injustice in the world, students learn about issues of right and wrong and are able to think about this in relation to their own lives. Furthermore, the pupils become ambassadors for local charities and inevitably investigate moral and ethical issues relating to their work, in turn applying these issues of justice to their own thoughts and decisions. Through Archie s challenges the pupils learn to work in teams, dealing with any mistakes and understanding the consequences of their actions. As schools and students take on the community action projects involved in the award, opportunities can arise for them to work with people and pupils from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Students learn to cooperate well with others and come up with ideas for serving the various communities in their local area. The award explores the varying levels of community in our lives and includes case studies and practical tasks, through Archie s challenges, relating to each one. Throughout the award the pupils are involved in community projects which function on a school, local, national and even international level, to help bring about change for the better. Cultural Due to the wide range of community opportunities involved in the awards, students may find themselves participating in various cultural opportunities as their school looks to serve their local area. The Awards focus on exploring and understanding community at a local, national and international level and encourages students to engage in community action projects. As they do this they celebrate diversity in the way they serve people from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 6 P a g e 3 Framework SIAMS Inspection links Content How well does the school, through its distinctive Christian character, meet the needs of all learners? Explanatory Notes The Young Leaders Awards support the Christian character of a school, contributing directly to academic achievement, personal development and wellbeing of learners, regardless of their ability or background. The Awards engender a Christian character which supports spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all learners regardless of their faith, through providing opportunities for learners to consider other denominations, faiths and cultures and by offering opportunities for learners to have hands-on experience of building Christian values through the various action elements. This also impacts on how well the Christian character promotes an understanding of and respect for diverse communities. The Awards require learners to complete a piece of action in school which helps shape the relationships between all members of the school community. What is the impact of collective worship on the school community? How effective is the religious education? How effective are the leadership and management of the school as a church school? We encourage schools to launch the Award with an assembly and in a faith school this could impact on the extent to which learners and adults engage with collective worship, its relevance, and the way it makes a difference to members of the whole school community. As part of their action in school Young Leaders may wish to develop an act of worship for other members of the school community contributing to how effectively learners are involved in the planning, leadership and evaluation of collective worship While the Award does not have to be delivered within RE curriculum time, many faith schools choose to do so as it directly contributes to the effectiveness of the curriculum in RE and especially the teaching of Christianity. Engaging in the Award allows Senior Leaders to show the extent to which leaders articulate an explicit Christian vision and foster a distinctively Christian character for the school, as well as focusing on the well- being of the whole school community. There are also boundless opportunities for engaging in effective partnerships with the church, the diocese/district and the wider community, as well as with the parents and carers The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 7 P a g e 6 National Curriculum Subject Religious Education* Citizenship The Young Leaders Awards contribute to the following aims: *based on Religious Education in English School: Non-Statutory Guidance (updated April 2012) Section 78 (1) of the 2002 Education Act states that all pupils should follow a balanced and broadly based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, social, mental and physical development of pupils and of society, and prepares pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. The Young Leaders Awards enable learners to explore the concepts of religion and belief and how their roles in the spiritual, moral and cultural lives of people in a diverse society helps individuals develop moral awareness and social understanding. Young Leaders will develop an interest in, and commitment to, volunteering through the awards, that they will take with them into adulthood (indeed we see many Young Leaders who continue volunteering even once their Award has finished). Young Leaders will develop, through their learning about people of faith and charities, a sound knowledge and understanding of how laws are shaped. Through planning and running events as part of their action projects, Young Leaders are equipped with the financial skills to enable them to manage their money on a day-to-day basis, and plan for future financial needs. English Computing Geography In all aspects of the Awards, Young Leaders will develop their ability to read easily, fluently and with good understanding, and develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information. During the course of the Award, Young Leaders will acquire a wide vocabulary, and be required to write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences. Throughout the Award, Young Leaders will use discussion in order to learn and show they can elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas. They will also develop their competency in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate. Through organising and running events, collecting evidence and researching, learners will demonstrate that they are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology. Through their study of leadership and charities and as they consider their local community, Young Leaders will develop contextual knowledge of the location of places, including their defining physical and human characteristics 2011 The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 8 P a g e 5 National Curriculum Subject History The Young Leaders Awards contribute to the following aims: Through classroom learning and discussions, Young Leaders will gain and deploy a historically-grounded understanding of abstract terms such as civilisation and parliament The lessons provided encourage learners to develop their understanding of historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance. They use these to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends and frame historically-valid questions such as; What role did William Wilberforce play in the abolition of slavery? or How influential was Gandhi in the struggle for Indian independence? Young Leaders will also gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between local, regional, national and international history; between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 9 P a g e 8 Testimonials What the Young Leaders are saying Amazing! When are we doing the YLA again? (KS3 - Archbishop Holgate's Academy) I didn t know anything about Elizabeth Fry or that she was on the five pound note, I tell everyone about her and her work when I see one now it s great telling people (KS3 - Manor CE Academy) The life of William Wilberforce has inspired me to change something terrible like poverty (KS3 - St Francis Academy) At first I thought the world was depressing but through watching the Archbishop of York Youth Trust videos I see there is good stuff out there and good people out there helping others. (KS3 - St Anne s Academy) I like doing the raps and poems but I m really looking forward to the action projects and helping the community. (KS3 - Archbishop Holgate s) It s fun and we d definitely recommend it to other people! We get more done in RE lessons and would like to keep doing it this way. (KS3 - St Anne s Academy) What the teachers are saying Some of our students on the course struggle academically but this award is giving them confidence and communication skills. In the conflict resolution module one group pitched to the school SLT about an anti-bullying campaign which included a text message system. This is now being considered by the SLT! (Sarah Daleys, Deanery High) The KS3 Award has been helping us to hit our citizenship targets through the community projects and wider understanding of community through module 2 this is great. In terms of SMSC the focus on the values in the award is really helping with this regardless of belief. They are developing openness to other people / cultural awareness and a desire to serve. It s making them aware of what is going on in the world (Kate Sandham, Assistant Director of Humanities with Faith, St Anne s Academy) It has been an absolute honour teaching this award. Every student has achieved so much from each lesson and we ve all enjoyed the variety, the topics and the outstanding lesson plans within the award. It has been a wonderful experience for me as a teacher. (Colette Doherty, Manor CE Academy) 2011 The Archbishop of York Youth Trust, all rights reserved. 12 P a g e 9 FAQs Is this just for faith/church schools? Not at all, we have a diverse range of schools running the Awards and although there are lessons which involve looking at Leaders of Faith we provide more lessons than you will need and you are welcome to choose those which you feel most appropriate for your setting. Which Year Group should I do the Award with? Young Leaders can undertake the Award at Key Stage 3 in Years 7, 8 and 9; although we do have schools delivering the Award with more able Key Stage 2 groups in Primary or with lower ability groups in Years 10 and 11. How will Learners earn the Award? We offer a suggested portfolio on our website but we do not want evidence gathering to be an onerous task for either the Young Leader or member of staff. The final module includes a challenge sheet which the students should complete, accompanying this we would like them to build up a portfolio of evidence revealing how they are being the change they want to see through photographs, videos and powerpoints (where appropriate). Further suggestions and portfolio templates are available on our website. Can I Run this as an extra-curricular activity? The overwhelming majority of our schools deliver the Awards in Curriculum or Enrichment Time but we do have a small number who deliver outside of curriculum time and we are happy for them to do so. Schools who do this report good results as long as the group is sufficiently large enough for group activities and for creative energy to flow. How can I fit this into Curriculum Time? Please see the Appendix for examples of how other schools have done this. What lessons would I teach this in? We have a diverse range of delivery models across the schools which deliver the Awards. Many build the Awards into their RE Curriculum or into Citizenship/PSE time (see Links p 3ff) while others deliver cross curricularly (through RE, Geography, History and English to name a few). A number of schools deliver the Awards during form time. When should I hold the Awards ceremony? Whenever you feel appropriate. We encourage you to make a big deal of the Awards ceremony, inviting parents, local dignitaries, media and of course us! For this reason there is no obligation to hold the ceremony immediately after Young Leaders complete the course, but when it best fits into your school life. Can we raise money for the Archbishop of York Youth Trust? We would be delighted for you to raise money for the Youth Trust. As well as running and developing the Young Leaders Award, we partner with many Youth Projects and provide financial support to young people who are being the change they want to see in their communities. You may like to adopt a project that we sponsor or raise money directly for us. We are a not-for-profit organisation so any money you raise will go to supporting projects that are engaging young people throughout the north of England.
