Many of the members also enjoyed an early breakfast prior to the meeting. This month s meeting was my penultimate meeting as President and in September I will be turning over the role to a new President. Unfortunately we are still missing volunteers to fill several key roles in the management of the club, including Communications Director and Vice President. Ed Shane, speaking for John Williams, made a plea for volunteers to take on these roles which need to be filled in time for our Annual General Meeting next month. Membership Chairman Dave Underwood introduced a New member to the club, in the person of Bernard Kruyne, a long time friend of his Sponsor, Hugo Kamerling. Welcome to the club, Bernard! David also advised that once the AGM approves club dues (remaining at $55) these are due as of August 1. Payment is acceptable BY EITHER Interac OR cheque - NO CASH (See Page 9). Special Events Co-chair Curt Allen advised that sign-up sheets are available for the Muskoka Cruise on October 2 and the Presidents Luncheon on October 24. There are 36 places available for the cruise and these must be sold by September 2 in order to insure that the cruise proceeds. Those interested, should contact Curt or John Butler as soon as possible to sign up. Our Director of Communications, Ron Thornbury made a presentation highlighting the need for PARTICIPATION in club activities. He also outlined again what is involved in producing the Newsletter and carrying out the other communication activities. Ron has been involved with producing the newsletter and preparing the audio/visual presentations for the last 5.25 years, and has been an invaluable asset to the various functions and operations within the club. Many thanks for your efforts over the years, Ron. Our guest speaker this month was Dr. David Posen who spoke to us about stress management. He is a long time Oakville resident who is the author of several books on the subject. He outlined many useful tools to manage stress and left us with three guidelines for minimizing stress in our own lives: - Get to know yourself - Step out of your comfort zone and do things differently from time to time - Live and let live respect others and don t judge them It was an interesting and informative presentation which generated many questions from the members in the Q & A portions following his address. 2 Guest Speaker David Posen Topic: Round Pegs, Square Holes I t was only after researching David s background on the web* that he has the nom de plume of doc calm! And this is how he came across when speaking to the Members at the August meeting. His down-to-earth approach resonated with his audience, and this was further evidenced with the number of questioners following his address. He briefly covered the key issues of stress and how to deal with it in our daily lives. His anecdotal approach certainly illustrated how various people were faced with stress in their lives and how they recognised it and finally were better able to handle and control the casual effect of it. Here are some of the areas that David discussed: * Multi-talented David Posen, MD has been a successful international keynote speaker, author and seminar leader for more than two decades. As an authority on stress management, he delights audiences across North America with an interactive approach that never fails to captivate, motivate, entertain and inspire. His work with corporate clients has positioned him as a speaker of choice for executive workshops and VIP retreats throughout Canada and the U.S. David s Doc Calm persona was introduced to online readers via Canoe.ca, where David wrote a weekly column on stress and lifestyle management practical, useful and entertaining words of wisdom that continue to be as current now as the day they were written. David was both introduced and thanked by Speakers Chair, Gord Stovel, who presented him with a token of our appreciation. Page 2

As per the recent, and past Club Surveys, the number one thing that Members choose was having good Speakers. So, speak up and have your interests addressed by Gord...he's very approachable! Page 3

6 August August Issue Issue For the 2018 CoolView competition, there will be six categories, namely: Structures Still Life Nature (including Animals) Portraits Humour Creative/Artistic 1. Photos MUST have been taken by the entrant (Doesn t have to be a recent photo). 2. For judging purposes, you may enter as either Less Skilled (no formal training, e.g. in a camera club). Skilled two categories (e.g. in a camera club) (1) Skilled - Entering adjusted photographs, i.e. Photoshop, or similar software (2) Skilled - Entering non-adjusted photographs, i.e. just as they were taken. Note: Cropping a photograph is NOT classified as adjusting a photograph). 3. Each PRINT MUST BE 8 X 10 (Best for judging quality of the photograph). 4. Awards will DEPEND ON THE NUMBER OF ENTRANTS, i.e. photographers. NOTE: You MAY ENTER a MAXIMUM ONE (1) photograph in each of the six (6) categories listed above. DEADLINE: December Meeting A. Photographs to be in a large envelope, clearly showing the Entrants Name. B. Photographs should be identified as to in what category the photo is to be judged and the SKILL level of the ENTRANT. 10 T 1/4 he August meeting saw 35 Members recognized for their contributions over the past 5 years. They did this quietly, without fuss, and did it through videos, photographs, visual stories, and humorous jokes. During this time period, the general membership was encouraged to send in material, in any format, of items that would be deemed to be of interest to fellow members...these Members took up the challenge, and consistently summitted material that was displayed in either the pre-meeting presentation or the monthly Newsletter.
