1 From Family Member to Workforce Partner Developing and Managing a Family Support Partner Program Cristy Corbin Family Support Partner Supervisor HFW - FSP Trainer and Coach UMFS Tanya Byington Parent Support Partner NAMI NoVA
2 THOUGHTS to PONDER What is an FSP? What is the role of an FSP with a family? Is my agency ready for parents to be part of our teams? What do I look for to determine if a parent is ready to work as an FSP? What are some helpful trainings for an FSP? What are the specific needs for an FSP within the High Fidelity Wraparound process? 2
3 Definition of Peer Support (the umbrella for an FSP) Peer support is a system of giving and receiving help founded on key principles of respect, shared responsibility, and mutual agreement of what is helpful. Peer support is not based on psychiatric models and diagnostic criteria. It is about understanding another s situation empathically through the shared experience of emotional and psychological pain. When people find affiliation with others they feel are like them, they feel a connection. This connection, or affiliation, is a deep, holistic understanding based on mutual experience where people are able to be with each other without the constraints of traditional (expert/patient) relationships. (Mead, 2001) 3
4 MWBvg2u_bV What is an FSP? A parent/caregiver with lived experiences of navigating the behavioral health system with their own child who is now ready to give back to other parents attempting to do the same. -Cristy Corbin
