2 JASA, Mid-Island Y JCC, and the Zelda Foster Studies in Palliative and End-of-Life Care of the NYU Silver School of Social Work are pleased to offer: The 3rd Annual Living Memories Project Conference: New Trends and Clinical Interventions in Grief and Bereavement Counseling Friday, January 25, :30am 1:45pm Mid-Island Y JCC 45 Manetto Hill Rd, Plainview, NY 4 CE Contact Hours Available Snow Date: February 1, 2019 About the Living Memories Project Meryl Ain embarked on The Living Memories Project, after she lost both her father and mother within 18 months. With her husband, Stewart, and her brother, Arthur M. Fischman, they set out to learn how others celebrated how their loved ones lived, rather than focusing on how they died. The Living Memories Project details through interviews, anecdotes, essays, poems, photographs, and the many ways that both ordinary individuals and celebrities incorporate the presence of their departed loved ones into their lives. Some who have shared their stories describe instances when they strongly and viscerally felt their loved one s presence, while others have drawn upon rituals or created a tangible memorial to comfort themselves. Goal The main objective of the conference is to empower participants with new tools for providing professional, competent, and compassionate care to those who are grieving or bereft. Who Should Attend? social workers psychologists nurses clergy mental health practitioners chaplains creative arts therapists educators students volunteers 2
3 Conference Agenda 8:30am 9:00am Registration and Breakfast with Exhibitors 9:00am 9:30am Welcome Remarks Lori Hardoon, LCSW, JASA Partners In Dignity, Director Alan Cohen, MPA, JASA s Chief Health Program Officer Rick Lewis, Mid-Island Y JCC s Chief Executive Officer 9:30am 11:30am Keynote: Dr. Susan Gerbino Working with People in the Midst of Grief: Sustaining our Personal Selves Dr. Susan Gerbino, Clinical Professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work, directs the Zelda Foster Studies Program in Palliative and End-of-Life Care (PELC), which includes training and mentoring across the career trajectory from MSW students to advanced PELC professionals. She has worked in PELC for 40 years and has a private practice working with people with life-limiting illnesses and the bereaved. Dr. Gerbino received the 2014 Career Achievement Award from the Project on Death in America and the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network, the 2014 Distinguished Teaching Award from the NYU Silver School of Social Work, and the 2015 Quality of Life Award from the American Cancer Society and the Association of Oncology Social Work. Keynote Overview For clinicians working with people who are bereaved, the question of how to manage our own feelings is central. Much of the literature focuses on the difficult consequences of the work burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma. While those are crucial and important, this keynote asks you to consider the work from a different vantage point that of vicarious resilience and post-traumatic growth. Examples from practice and life will be shared. Understand the key elements of vicarious resilience Analyze the intersection of post-traumatic growth and work with the bereaved Develop a framework for assessing the positive impact on the clinician of work with the bereaved 11:30am 11:45am Break with Exhibitors 3
