1 Personal Social Services: Adult Social Care User Survey in England Summary of Results in Peterborough
2 Introduction This report contains findings from the Adult Social Care Survey This national survey takes place every year. This report shows the results for Peterborough City Council and how they compare to national results. The survey seeks the opinions of service users aged 18 and over who are receiving support services funded by Peterborough City Council. It helps the council to understand more about how services are affecting people s lives and where improvements need to be made. This report comes from information published by NHS Digital on 2 October 2018.
3 How is the survey carried out? In February 2018 we sent out 1448 surveys in the post. There were four versions of the survey, for people in residential and nursing care and for those in the community, with two versions in Easy Read. We also produced the survey in large print. We received back 652 surveys - a response rate of 45%.
4 65.8% of service users were extremely or very satisfied with the care and support they received This is slightly higher than the national average of 65%
5 Quality of Life 64.5% of service users rated their quality of life as good or better. This is better than the England average of 62.6%
6 Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework (ASCOF) Social Care Related Quality of Life indicator The ASCOF Social Care Related Quality of Life indicator is calculated from a range of different aspects of people s lives. It includes: Nutrition Personal care Safety Social Contact How people are helped Control over daily life Whether people spend time doing what they want to do ASCOF Social Care Related Quality of Life Indicator for Peterborough City Council 2017/ / In 2017/18 Peterborough City Council scored 19.6 which is2015/16 our highest score to date! The all England score was only 2014/
7 Choice over care and support When asked about whether they had enough choice over care and support services they receive, 70.1% of respondents said yes. This is better than the England average of 68.2%.
8 Control over daily life 38.1% of service users said they had as much control over their daily life as they wanted. This is better than the England average of 33.5%

11 We did worse than the national average on these questions! 12 How having help makes people feel 61.2% of people said that having help to do things makes them feel better about themselves. This is the same as the national average. 65.4% of people said that the way they are helped and treated makes them feel better about themselves. This is better than the England average of 62.5%
13 How safe do you feel? More than two thirds of national respondents (69.9%) of service users reported feeling as safe as they want, compared to 1.8% who reported not feeling at all safe In Peterborough this was lower at 68.4%, however only 1% reported not feeling safe at all
14 If you worry about your safety, what things concern you most? I don t like going out in any bad weather People responded that the things that worried them most were: Falling over inside the house Falling over outside Uneven, dangerous pavements People walk in front of wheelchairs and mobility scooters and are blind to disability people Vehicles parked on pavements
15 Family always needs to help as its all online. God help the people with no family Information and advic e 75.7% of service users found it very or fairly easy to find informatio n and advice about support, services or ben efits This is better than the England average of 73.2% Advice about benefits has been limited at best, but everything else is ok
16 Before my stay in hospital I joined in activity groups and Singing for the Brain at the Resource Centre. Now I am housebound Service User s health Health in general Pain and mental health 41% of people said that their health in general was good or very good. This is lower than the national average of 42.3% 35.3% of people said they had no pain or discomfort, compared to 36.7% nationally. My mum helps me as I have Crohns Disease and my tablets make me hungry but I can t eat fat or sugar However, 47% said that they were not anxious or depressed compared to 45.4% nationally.
17 More people than the England average said they were able to: Mobility and Self Care Easily get around indoors (except steps) by themselves Feed themselves Manage their own finances and paperwork Use the WC/toilet by themselves Wash their face and hands by themselves Less people than the England average said that they were able to: X does not do anything for himself, feeding, washing, he has to be coaxed all the time and he forgets what you have asked him to do Get in and out of a bed or chair by themselves Wash themselves all over either using a bath or a shower Get dressed or undressed by themselves
18 Since our bathroom was turned into a wet room, the shower door doesn t shriek and it is lovely and warm What is your environm ent like? 86.9% of service users said that their home meets their needs very well, or meets most of their needs. This is slightly better th an the England averag e of 86% My mum helped me to get Care and Repair to get my bathroom turned into a wet room

20 Do you receive practical help from your family? My daughter food shops for me and I prepare my own food and drink 88.8% of service users receive practical help from their spouse, partner, family, friends or neighbours. This is almost the same as the England average of 88.9%. 29.9% of service users pay for additional or top up care themselves which is higher than the England average of 28.6%. 21 28 Fire Service Safe & Well referrals have been made What have we done as a result of the survey? Cold homes are not just uncomfortable to live in, they can have a negative effect on health. In Peterborough there are still a large number of houses that do not have a central heating system with a boiler and radiators. 477 referrals have been made in The Warm Home Fund First Time Central 2018/19 to Local Energy Advice Heating Programme is a programme to fund Programme (LEAP). 22 Adults Positive Challenge What have we done as a result of the survey? Working with service users at the Dementia Resource Centre, two guides have been developed for people with dementia. These are: Dementia - A Guide to Services in Peterborough Mental Capacity and Managing Money A brand new online Information Portal, the Peterborough Information Network (PIN), has been developed to make it quick and easy for people with care and support needs and their carers and families to access the information, advice and guidance that they need. A full time resource has been appointed to manage the PIN. The Adults Positive Challenge Programme is the council s programme which seeks to manage demand for Adult Social Care by recognising and building on the strengths and aspirations of people and their communities. This inclues a neighbourhood based operating model seeking to address social isolation and improve choice.
