Presented for the National Stuttering Association Annual Convention 2008! Diane C. Games, M.A. CCC-SLP Board Recognized Specialist Fluency Disorders
Fluency Friday Plus Themes/Ideas Teaching Parents Bringing People together with a common theme

Suggestions for wording, important points and graphics come from the students. Each child/teen contributes and ideas are shared with other students on my caseload allowing for communication between students when a group is not possible.
Children who stutter need a vocabulary to describe communication both stuttered and fluent.because Stuttering often becomes the it factor i.e. It happens when I talk on the phone. When a person can describe a behavior, then solutions or changes in behavior become more manageable.
PowerPoint creates a comfortable interaction to talk about stuttering and discuss difficult communication situations When creating a slide, the students think about communication! PPT provides a format to help them plan strategies. Sitting beside or behind the student eliminates reliance upon the slp to give the answer or solve the problem!
Thinking of a topic or idea to develop. First, we define the issue i.e. what is avoiding? Next, we discuss what can happen..i.e. if we avoid. Finally, we develop possible ways to manage the behaviors
Students need time to think about the consequences of behaviors such as avoidance or reactions to various time pressure situations. The Power Point presentation format provides feedback from other CWS! Students can view the opinions from others, react, and/or experiment with various options.
Students can experiment with solutions. Problem Solving is an important aspect of treatment. PPT slides allow change, analysis and growth! No solution is omitted all are discussed.
What is a Stutter? Time Pressure in Communication Interactions Avoidance My Story Analogy to Star Wars Negative Thinking!
D. Games & Kids 2006
Prolongations Repetitions with Tension Blocks Filler words used to take up space or as starters Long Pauses Changing Words & Sounds Not talking

Saying a sound or syllable several times ba ba With Tension ba

Take up Are used to start word

Feels like your throat gets real tight. Speech sounds tight and it is harder to talk..

Easy starts ( Maaay I.. have a cookie?) Light starts (slow and soft) BREATHE!!!! Relax Stutter in an easy way
Eye Contact makes me feel nervous BUT people feel comfortable if you look at them when you are talking. Eye Contact is important for good communication.
Don t Put up with It!!!! D. Games & kids
Waiting your turn to speak Talking with every eye looking at you
Talk over someone Talk over noise
Feeling rushed Being interrupted Being asked to repeat something
Anxious: waiting for my turn & hoping that my speech will be ok Worried: what if I make a mistake?? Rushed: if I talk faster, maybe I won t stutter
WHAT DOES TIME PRESSURE DO TO YOUR SPEECH? Causes a physical reaction: shorter & tighter breaths, tension, anxiety Makes it harder to use strategies.
Causes me to rush and force my words out! Causes me to talk louder in order to be heard!

Got some ideas?????

Reduce Tension Fight the need to RUSH! Use strategies Take a Risk Speak at your own beat!
But, taking your time can lead to some great results..
Means Using Your Controls Pausing & Slightly Slowing Taking a few Risks

will understand more about how you speak will experiment with some ideas to fight time pressure And the Pieces of the Stuttering & Communication Puzzle will begin to make sense..
Don t like being interrupted Or Talking louder over people Sometimes I feel rushed Stuttering comes and goes Goals: relax body, slow my speech in the beginning, & breathing.

When under time pressure, use light contacts and light touches to start you speech. Slow down! You probably have more time to speak then you think! Take more risks and don t avoid words. Use your strategies to get through the word.
Many teens and older children start to avoid various sounds, words or speaking situations. Avoidance is a reaction to stuttering that could be labeled as a Coping Behavior. The problem with Avoidance is that sometimes children & teens manage their speech so well that it is difficult to determine when Avoidance is occurring. They sound very fluent!!!! However, Avoiding is very stressful for the speaker.
& STUTTERING! D. GAMES & KIDS, 2005
Not talking when you really want to say something Not joining conversations
Being worried or anxious about when or where to speak.finding ways to not speak!!
Not saying certain words or sounds. Rephrasing and thinking about what to say and how to say it..
Not talking freely, or Trying to speak Perfectly
Speaking with a different voice or talking like someone else.
It is embarrassing to stutter in front of people. I don t want to make a fool of myself. Thinking about Stuttering Trying not to Stutter I want to fit in or be fluent like everyone else!! Avoiding Difficult Speaking Situations
Fear or Shame over stuttering??? Just being Mad about stuttering???
It is embarrassing to make a mistake If I can t speak perfectly, then avoiding is another choice
It can become habit forming. When it is impossible to avoid saying a sound/word, speaking can be more difficult. Avoiding is a way of hiding stuttering.
Reduce tension in your speech machine
Experiment with talking in a number of situations. Tell others that you stutter.
Stutter in an easier way.. Try strategies such as light contacts, easy starts, pull outs and cancellations.
Take some Risks Try some New Ways of Talking Speak at Your Own Beat Your Messages are Important!
Don t let Avoiding become the easy way out Focus on communicating and keep talking!!!
Makes speaking in similar situations more difficult Keeps you from sharing your ideas and comments Gives other people the wrong impression
Children and Teens need perspective on their story. The My Story PowerPoint allows children and teens to reflect on what has happened in the past and what is happening in their lives currently. This PowerPoint gives them a chance to express how they would like others to respond to their communication problem.

I was born on October 25, I started playing baseball at the age of 5. I started stuttering when I was around 7. I started playing football at the age of 8. I started playing basketball at the age of 5.
Around 3 rd grade I started going to speech. She taught me how to use easy speech. My speech was just coming along.
Now I have 3 pets & I have a dog, cat, ferret, & 5 cats for little while. I am on the Extreme Sharks (baseball team). I am getting better at easy starts & light contacts.
It s possible to control my stuttering. I use easy starts, keep breathing out,& light contacts. Stuttering can have bad days & good days
I appreciate how u guys help me out. I also appreciate how u guys don t interrupt me & u guys $ for sessions.
Sometimes its hard for me. I don t like to be called on to read, but I don t mind talking in front of class. Call & ask me questions.
Being on a good team in baseball. Learning to control my speech. I keep talking even if I m having a bad day.
Choosing to talk when I m having a bad day. Trying to use my strategies.
I don t like stuttering.
Andrew S.
I first realized I had a stuttering problem when I went to therapy, around the 6 th grade. I remember using the tension bar during therapy to practice tension. My speech improved and I stopped going to therapy for a while.
My speech was fluent for a few years until recently this year. I learned to control my speech by using cancellations and easy starts or light contacts.
Going to therapy every week to practice using strategies. Gaining confidence in my speech. Learning about my stuttering more so I can understand my stuttering.
I wish they could see things from my perspective once in a while. That I m not really any different from anyone else.
I don t use my controls as much at home because I talk more and feel more laid back at home. When you guys talk to me about my stuttering, it doesn t make things easier. It helps more when you don t really say anything to me about my stuttering.
That I actually have a stuttering problem even though they may not notice it. I don t participate as much as I would like to because of my stuttering. It helps when you randomly call on me to answer questions instead of going down the row. It is easier for me to participate in smaller groups, rather than as a class.
Trying to apply my speech techniques more in all types of situations. Getting more involved in conversation and situations that I normally don t get involved in.
My stuttering isn t something that is going to hold me back from anything in the long run.
Children and Teens look up to Famous People. Success stories often give them hope and examples of what can be accomplished. It is motivating to know that others have dealt with stuttering and experienced success!!!

One of the hardest things in life is having words in your heart that you can t utter.

From age 6 until age 14, he was virtually mute. He believes that his stuttering was a result of emotional overload or trauma. His family often accused him of lying about his inability to speak.
During his years of muteness, he did talk to some of his family, to animals, and even to himself. But never to a visitor or to other people in his daily life. To James, speech was a wall that I could not surmount!
A high school English teacher recognized James talent and intellect. As a result, he challenged James to read a creative poem in front of class to avoid an accusation of plagiarism.
Shaking cursing himself straining to get the words out.pushing from the bottom of his soul. When he opened his mouth, the words flowed out smoothly, without stuttering.
The written word was safe for him. The script was a sanctuary. And slowly, his powers of speech were resurrected. The rest is history..
You get so nervous during certain passages of script that you can t get through them. You can t make them work. I am still not good with speeches. The stage is what I do best. I have a problem with anything that is not well scripted.
There is nothing more moving or powerful than the power of the Word when beautiful language is married to deep passion. The voice is the instrument for the expression of that power.
In my silence, I was robbing myself of any presence. I am who I am. I was denying myself that.or something that had been set loose in me denied it. When I learned to talk, I reclaimed my voice from that long silence. I rediscovered the joy of communication.
This is who I am. For what it s worth, this is how I feel and this is who I am.
Allows for Communication between students who feel isolated. PP can incorporate a students ideas in a way that validates their feelings. PP can be fun and motivating for the child/teen who stutters. PP as a teaching tool is flexible, can be changed, can be updated and copies can be sent home for further discussion. PP presentations can also deal with specific issues such as teasing, speech helpers, etc.
Materials seen in this presentation will be available on (Fluency Friday Plus) This web site is a product of an intensive treatment program for children/teens who stutter developed by local speech-language pathologists in the Cincinnati area to bring children/teens and their families together to learn more about stuttering.
