2 This booklet is about ways to build on our strengths and to increase our wellbeing in order to meet the challenges we all encounter from time to time. It is about realising that a range of achievable actions are strongly linked to people feeling happier and more satisfied with their lives. So what are the 5 Ways to Wellbeing? The 5 Ways to Wellbeing are a set of actions that can improve our wellbeing in everyday life. Volunteer Centre The Volunteer Centre in Stoke on Trent can provide details of the range of volunteering opportunities available. Contact: The Dudson Centre, Hope Street, Hanley, Stoke on Trent ST1 5DD volunteering@vast.org.uk This booklet will guide you through each one of the 5 ways to wellbeing and include a set of questions at the end of each one to help you put these achievable steps into practice. 4 Connect With the people around you Seeking out positive connections in life can make us feel more in control of our lives and help towards our wellbeing. Connecting with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours can support you every day. 4 13
5 Give Do something nice for a friend The more we give the more we receive is a wise old saying. When you give, give openly and from the heart. Some people say that they find giving easy, but that they do not feel as comfortable in receiving compliments. Giving is a two way process being accepting of what someone else gives is good for them as well as for you. Giving is associated with mental wellbeing. 12 5
6 Be active Go for a walk or run Being active is important for both our physical and mental health. Small changes can make a big difference. Just ten minutes a day has shown to benefit our mental wellbeing. Making slight changes to our lifestyle or our daily routine can create a bit more space to be more active and improve our wellbeing. You can see your GP for advice if you have any health concerns in relation to physical activity. 6 11
7 Keep learning Try something new Learning new skills or practising old ones are important in improving personal wellbeing. It keeps us interested and focussed. We don t have to sign up for a college course degree, simple daily opportunities really count. For example we could learn how to cook a new recipe, play a new sport or find out something we are curious about. 10 7
