2 Introduction The International Conference of Legal Regulators is fast becoming a must-attend event in the diaries of law societies and bar associations around the world. Featuring varied content from high-level strategy and performance delivery to policy development and implementation, it attracts bar executives at all levels encouraging wider discussion and participation, and ultimately, greater take-home value for the organisations involved. That is why the Law Society of Scotland would be delighted to welcome the conference to Edinburgh in With a strategy to lead legal excellence and a mission to be a world-class professional body, The Law Society of Scotland is an ambitious and outward-facing organisation. We appreciate that to achieve our aims, we need to benchmark ourselves against international standards and we are always keen to learn from international colleagues who share many of the same challenges and innovate to overcome them. With our own award-winning in-house events team and modern conferencing facilities, we have a reputation for holding high-quality conferences and seminars. Even if we can t accommodate the entire event in-house, we have space for meetings, receptions and fringe events and have strong links with venues across Edinburgh for the wider conference requirements. Why Scotland? Autumn 2018 would be an interesting time to come to Scotland. Timed to follow the publication of the results of a 15-month independent review of the regulation of legal services and complaints handling in Scotland, Edinburgh would be an ideal destination for delegates to discuss and debate key issues that will have been given thorough consideration by the review group. One possible theme could relate to the Scottish Government s commitment to ensuring an approach to regulation that supports growth in the legal services sector while also placing consumer interests firmly at the heart of any system of regulation. Can both interests be served at the same time? How will that balance be achieved? We would welcome the chance to collaborate with the conference organisers on a programme to suit a wide variety of attendees. In addition, with the IBA conference being held in Rome next year, delegates coming from further afield would be able to make use of the direct 3-hour Ryanair service from Edinburgh to Ciampino if we held it during the first week of October.

3 Regulating the legal profession The 15-month review into the regulation of legal services and complaints handling in Scotland was launched by the Scottish Government in April Led by the current chair of NHS24 in Scotland, the independent review, which involves key stakeholders including representatives from the Law Society of Scotland, will make recommendations to reform and modernise the statutory framework covering the profession, as well as investigate the unregulated legal services market and its impact on consumers. It follows a number of calls from interested parties, including the Society, to make changes to the current system to simplify processes, improve interoperability and support changes to the legal services market. Why Edinburgh? The capital of Scotland is a multi-award-winning city with a strong reputation as one of the most attractive destinations in the world, with an ideal mix of culture, shopping, dining, music, heritage and leisure activities. Edinburgh is a global conference destination and hosts hundreds of events every year, ranging from small meetings, corporate events and incentive groups to large association meetings and international conferences. Combine this with the region s continued culture of innovation and research excellence and it is easy to see why Edinburgh has been voted Event and Festival Destination of the year 2017 by the Luxury Travel Guide Awards, 1st in the Global Cities of the Future category at the 2016/17 FDi Strategy awards and was ranked second in the world by the Financial Times in 2017 for quality of life. ENCOURAGING ATTENDANCE; ENSURING SUCCESS Having attended previous conferences, we are convinced of the important contribution ICLR makes to the international legal events calendar. We are keen to see the conference grow and would be pleased to play a part in increasing awareness and heightening its profile among colleagues. Between now and autumn 2018, we will have numerous opportunities to promote the conference to colleagues in Scotland, the UK, the EU and further afield through our various networks and from attendance at other legal events.

4 ICLR 2018 branding and identity We recognise the influence of strong branding on the reputation of an organisation or success of an event. Using a range of formats and platforms to promote our initiatives, we have a digital communications strategy in place to ensure that our content is always engaging and accessible, with measurable outcomes. Applying these principles to ICLR2018, we think we could develop a concept around the event that will contribute to its success. Thanks to our new responsive website, we will be able to create a landing page for the conference at no cost that works well across all devices (sample attached). We would also be happy to work with our regular designers to come up with a unique logo that we and others can use to promote the conference.
