2 CASE LAW TRACK Criminal Law Update Speaker: B. John Burns, Assistant Federal Defender, Federal Public Defender Office LOCATION: BALLROOM B This session will cover federal and state criminal cases. 9:50-11:20 Iowa Civil Law Update Speaker: Hon. Paul Ahlers, District Associate Judge, District 2B This session will summarize and discussing published civil cases of the Iowa Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. 1:30-2:15 Workers Compensation Update Speaker: Ashley Grieser, McKinney Law Office P.C. This presentation will focus on recent changes to Iowa workers compensation law and the effect on Iowa s workers. 2:15-3:00 Employment Law Update Speaker: Jill Jensen-Welch, Dickinson Mackaman Tyler & Hagen PC This session will provide quick hit updates on new laws, regulations, agency guidances and cases, as well as what s trending in employment law. COURT REPORTERS TRACK Hot Lotto Case Background Speaker: Robert Sand, Assistant Iowa Attorney General LOCATION: ROOMS Rob Sand was the prosecutor for the Hot Lotto case in Des Moines, Iowa. The Hot Lotto case involved Eddie Tipton who was a Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) employee in Iowa. He was in charge of the random number generator computers which picked the numbers for the Hot Lotto game held in various states. Eddie Tipton was charged with manipulating the computers to pick pre-selected numbers. Rob Sand will talk about the investigation, the litigation and the trial. The A to Z Program Speaker: Ann Carothers, Registered Professional Reporter, Certified Reporting Instructor Ann Carothers will talk about her experience with the A to Z program, including how she got started, the preparation she had to undertake and her classroom experiences. She will encourage others to take on this class to help ensure that we are able to get the classes at DMACC full of students who know what they are getting into and able to complete the program. 1:00-2:00 Above + Beyond Cancer Speaker: Dr. Richard Deming, Medical Director, Mercy Cancer Center Dr. Deming will talk about his non-profit organization dedicated to elevating the lives of those touched by cancer. Dr. Deming has led cancer survivors on inspirational and mind-body-spirt pilgrimmages to Mount Everest, Mount Kilimanjaro and Machu Picchu. He is dedicated to the principles of human dignity, social justice and compassion. He will correlate his experience with cancer patients to court reporters to help reporters find ways to relieve the stress from their jobs and how it can be beneficial to our mind, body and spirit.
3 COURT REPORTERS TRACK (cont d) 2:00-3:00 Motivation Speaker: Doreen Sutton, National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) Vice President LOCATION: ROOMS During this session, Doreen Sutton will be talking to the membership about motivation. Motivation is one of the strong components of success, and knowing how to keep yourself inspired is vital to ensuring the health of your career. She will teach attendees how to measure the impact motivation has on their business and how to rekindle the spark to deliver the best service possible to their clients as well as potential clients. 3:15-4:45 Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence Speaker: Laurie Shipper, Domestic Violence Coalition Laurie Shipper and two others from her team will be discussing the work they do at the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the various programs they have and the impact they have on women in the community who are involved in domestic violence.
