2 INTERIM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S MESSAGE Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (CLSMF) is making plans for the 3 rd annual Jazz for Justice event taking place October 7, This advocacy event will raise much needed funds and awareness for CLSMF so that we can continue to provide services promoting equal justice. CLSMF works to close the justice gap by solving legal problems for children, seniors and veterans to prevent domestic violence, prevent homelessness and ensure veterans and their families have access to benefits. We also do a broad brush of impact work on civil rights for minorities and disabled individuals who cannot afford a lawyer. All CLSMF services are free, but Michael who is a Veteran without services, Melissa who is disabled and is being disproportionately punished in public school and Eugenia who is being evicted and will become homeless won t get legal help this year. CLSMF does not have enough funding to serve the 39,000 requests for help received annually. CLSMF is unable to hire more staff attorneys and having to turn away needy seniors, Veterans, children and woman like Hannah: Justice Matters to Hannah Hannah, a stay-at-home mom from Marion County, had suffered years of outbursts and injuries at the hands of a violent husband who was so controlling that she he wouldn t let her leave the house even to check the mail. After a particularly brutal assault, Hannah knew she needed to protect herself and her daughter, but had no money to hire a lawyer. Thankfully she acquired the help she needed at CLSMF s Domestic Violence Advocacy Project. Hannah s CLSMF lawyer obtained an essential Injunction for Protection, and later negotiated an award settlement to relocate Hannah to a safe undisclosed place, child support, and a safety-focused parenting plan. When Hannah found the courage to leave, she knew she couldn t do it alone. With the help of CLSMF, she is now safe from her abuser s reach, has employment and is living free from abuse and terror. There are thousands of women like Hannah across the 12 Central Florida counties that CLSMF serves. They need your immediate help and support. The Jazz for Justice is an advocacy event that allows the community to participate in an incredible evening to make a HUGE impact on the lives of children, seniors, Veterans, woman and the homeless. Participants have the opportunity to meet dignitaries, judges and over 200 lawyers. They will hear our story and enjoy an evening of incredible jazz while being pampered with delicious hors-d'oeuvres, well-stocked open bars and photo opportunities for all. Why be a Sponsor? Anticipated Reach: 300 Individuals who are Judges, Lawyers, Law Students philanthopist and community advocates. Each attendee has the potential for contacts of approximately 100 potential customers. Combined billboard, radio, TV, online and grassroots marketing reaches at least 1,000,000 + people. Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida is fortunate to have dedicated people like you who provide the much-needed support to raise awareness and funds to help us continue our mission to close the justice gap by providing free legal services to families and individuals in need. The work we do supports social order, family stability, educational progress, broad civil rights impact work with our schools and systems, physical and financial protection of elders from abuse and a judicial system that is efficient and just to all. Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida is the primary provider of free legal services to the poor in Central Florida and fields over 39,000 calls annually. By providing access to our courts when no one else can help, CLSMF attorneys help fulfill America s promise of a just society, with equal treatment under the law. Every Dollar Counts! Funds received through Jazz for Justice provide the following for the clients we serve on a daily basis. $350 Helps support three people to get advice on the CLSMF legal aid hotline and helps seven people get brief legal services with quality legal staff $750 Helps one victim of domestic violence receive legal representation and gain protection from their abusers $1,000 Provides a class for first time homebuyers so they can make educated decisions and provide stability for their families $2,000 Provides four U.S. Veterans with free legal advice, counsel, referral, education and representation in filing VA claims and appeals $10,000 Pays for financial and abuse case work for seniors $25,000 Pays for 1 part time attorney to open 150 cases to prevent homelessness $35,000 Pays for a part time help line attorney to give legal advice over the phone for a year $50,000 Pays for an attorney to conduct broad civil rights and discrimination work in our schools upholding the rights of minorities and the disabled to stay in school instead of being sent to prison
