Although the Society has budgeted $400 annually to buy orchid plants for the zoo, blooming plant donations are always welcome. Mahalo to Michiko Suzuki: Michiko Suzuki our official hostess at our monthly meetings, has made guests and new members feel welcomed. Michiko will be stepping down at the end of the year from her official capacity to give someone else a chance to serve.

4 Mahalo to Jane Nishigaya: Jane Nishigaya has presided over the monthly refreshment for much of the past year. She was responsible for bringing all the stuff necessary to provide the refreshment for all the members. She will also be stepping down at the end of the year. Mahalo to Ernest and Janice Nogawa: Ernest and Janice Nogawa will be taking over the refreshment duties beginning January Mahalo to Ernie Lam: Ernie Lam donated all the plants he received from working at our show. Mahalo to Alice Kim: Alice Kim for her generous monetary donation. Guest Speaker for November, Dr. Bernie Cagauan: Dr. Bernie Cagauan of Kiilani Gifts & Gardens shared a part of his commercial collection of blooming dendrobiums with the club. This is the largest group of dendrobiums orchids grown for commercial use. These plants were later offered for sale to the members. According to Dr. Cagauan, the traits that consumers desire in their orchids are color, bloom size, how long the flowers last and flowering period of the year. He uses the growth hormone BAP-10 to accelerate keiki and flower growth. BAP-10 is not available locally but can be gotten from It is a growth hormone and at this present time is in the experimental stage. He shared a dendrobium plant which he used BAP-10 at the base and as a spray on the leaves. It had about 15 flower spikes which surprised him as well. He mentioned Dr. Bill Sakai who is well versed on this hormone and suggested him for a future speaker. He continues with Nutricote every six months for general growth. When asked about insecticide he preferred Sevin for ants and mealy bugs and soap for mites and thrips. He does not use Malathion because of the strong odor. Bernie concluded the meeting by demonstrating the planting of honohono keikis into 2 inch pots with membership participation. It was a very entertaining evening! He was so popular that many of the members recommended seeing him again next year.

5 New Members and Guests: Please welcome new members: Kim Higo Jennie Dang Orchid Plant Sale: Anyone can sell their plants at our monthly meetings. However, sellers are required to enter at least one blooming plant for judging. The only exception is the month of June when we have our annual silent auction. Please note that the Society does not collect anything for providing this opportunity. A donation of a plant to be raffled would also be greatly appreciated. American Orchid Society Corner: The American Orchid Society has Members Meetings twice a year, once in the spring and then in the fall. These events are open to any orchid lover to attend. Think about going to the next one which is in Oklahoma City from April 28 May 2, You can obtain information under Events at the AOS web site or at At each of these meetings the AOS has been hosting Town Hall meetings where they have been answering questions from membership in a public setting. Let me share a couple of the questions and answers from the recent California town hall meeting. Q. How is the AOS doing financially? Answer: The organization is struggling and has cut its expenses in every instance that it can. The staff has been dramatically cut back. Also several fundraising campaigns have been initiated including the Garden Committee s Save the Garden campaign and the Development Committee has asked for donations from Trustees, Committee Chairs and Committee Members. Also the Development Committee, along with the Affiliated Society Committee, has asked for financial assistance from Affiliated Orchid Societies. If we all pull together we can make it through this difficult financial time. Q. Have we absolutely concluded we can t unload the headquarters? Answer: If AOS can attract enough people to the facility we are better off having it open. It provides positive cash flow. It also provides the means for AOS members to have reciprocal membership to over 200 other gardens around the world. The headquarters was paid for by donations from several generous AOS supporters. If you have a burning question for the AOS leadership, come to a Town Hall meeting you re sure to get your answers there! Or you can me and I will get an answer to you: affiliated_societies@aos.org Sincerely, Carol Holdren AOS Affiliated Society Committee
