1 RRRC NEWS MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE ROCK RIVER RADIO CLUB Volume 37 Number 10 October 2017 President s Report October will be a busy month for our group, starting with our meeting now just a few days away on October 3. In addition to the monthly business meeting, we will have our yearly auction. Jack, K9WC, will again be on hand to serve as our auctioneer. Jack does a great job with this and it is always a very entertaining evening. Please take a look through the shack and if you have excess items that could make it to the auction, we welcome them. As in past years, there are two ways to auction off your items. The first option is to donate the item to the club at which time the auction will occur with the proceeds being added to the club treasury. The second option is to have the item auctioned off where you keep the proceeds. In this case, the club retains ten percent (10%) of the proceeds from that item with the other ninety percent (90%) being returned to you. Unless otherwise noted, we assume an item has been donated for auction. Please make sure in advance that Dennis, KC9ICA or Jack, K9WC, know your intent to retain the proceeds from your item if that is your wishes to save confusion. We will keep a running list at the end of the evening and payment will be made to Dennis, KC9ICA. In addition to radio gear, other items of interest have found their way to the auction and can serve as a great donation to raise funds for the club. In the past, this has included baked goods and other related items. Feel free to bring your items and we will find them a good home! This is always a fun evening so please plan to join us. Prior to the meeting, some of us will be sitting down to likely discuss the upcoming Simulated Emergency Test. The point of sitting down before the meeting is to keep the meeting flowing to move into the auction and present only the needed information for this event to the membership. I have asked Dale, WB9ADB to put something together within the newsletter to provide more information on this. If you have interest, please join us about 6:30 P.M. in the meeting room on Tuesday to further discuss this event. We will again have a special event station as part of National Wildlife Refuge week. This event will take place on Saturday, October 14 at the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge location. Note that this is at the National Wildlife Refuge site, not the state site on State Highway 28. We will set up about 9:30 A.M. and operate a special event using the club call sign allowing others to make contact with the Refuge site. This is a great promotional tool for the site and also for our club. We still have many full color QSL cards for this event to mail out to interested stations. If you would like to join us to see the event or to do some operating, please stop out. We are normally on hand until about 4:00 P.M. or so. We will also meet before the event at Village Garden in Juneau for breakfast about 8:00 A.M. if anyone is interested in joining. From breakfast, we will pick up the club trailer and head over to set up. When on site, please be considerate of others on hand and please thank the staff if you see them for again welcoming us. They have been very open to our continued use and promotion of the site! We are also trying to finalize the date for the club Christmas party. At the previous meeting, we had discussed moving the event to December 10. I now have to fly out of state for work that morning. I have sent a note to our club officers to see how they wish to proceed. One option is to still have it on December 10 however someone else will have to emcee the event. We could also go back to the original date of December 3. I should be able to be back in President Ryan Klavekoske KB9OWD Vice President Dave DePover K9MKP Secretary Dennis Weigel KC9ICA Treasurer (acting) Dennis Weigel KC9ICA Club Historian Gary Pedersen KA9BAE Officers Program Director Kevin Green KC9YPK Emergency Coordinator Dale Marks WB9ADB Assistant Emergency Coordinator Open Position Repeater Directors Dale Marks WB9ADB (Trustee) Dennis Druecke K9DLD Dave DePover K9MKP

2 town in time to emcee the event on that date. Either option is fine with me and we will make a final decision at the meeting on Tuesday. 73, Ryan KB9OWD RRRC President. *********************************************************** September 2017 RRRC Meeting Minutes The regular monthly meeting of the Rock River Radio Club was called to order on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, by RRRC President Ryan Klavekoske, KB9OWD, at 7:06 PM. ** Committee Reports ** Treasurer s Report: The Treasurer s report covering August 2017, was presented by RRRC Secretary Dennis Weigel, KC9ICA. All financial transactions were presented and reviewed by the group. There were no additions or corrections. A motion to accept the Treasurer s Report as presented was made by Jerry Arndt, NO9U, and seconded by Ralph Hasler, N9WBL. A vote was taken and the motion passed. Secretary s Report: The minutes for the August 2017 meeting were presented by RRRC Secretary Dennis Weigel, KC9ICA. There were no additions or corrections. A motion to accept the minutes as presented was made by Ralph Hasler, N9WBL, and seconded by Gary Pedersen, KA9BAE. A vote was taken and the motion passed. Repeater Committee: Dale Marks, WB9ADB, reported that there was nothing new with the W9TCH repeater over the last month. Field Day Camp Sites: Dale Marks, WB9ADB, reported that all of the regular sites have been reserved by the Club for 2018 and are available for members to select and pay for. The Club pays half of the camping fee as always. A.R.E.S.: Dale Marks, WB9ADB, reported that the 2017 ARRL Simulated Emergency Test (SET) will be held on the weekend of October 7 & 8. Dale will have additional details at the October meeting. There will be a pre-meeting for anyone interested in further discussion on the SET operations at 6:30 PM preceding the October monthly meeting in our regular meeting room. He also reported that the annual state ARES/RACES Conference will be held in Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday October 21. The conference will focus on digital communication modes. ** Old Business ** National Wildlife Refuge Week: Ryan, KB9OWD, has contacted the Horicon NWR to verify that we are invited to set up our ARES trailer for a Special Event Station at the Visitor Center again this year. If so, it will be on Saturday October 14 th. He has received response that we are welcome to do so, but he is awaiting formal confirmation of the times. We will plan on the event and will meet as in the past at the Village Garden for breakfast at 8:00 AM, then pick up the trailer and head to the NWS visitor center to set up for operation. ** New Business ** RRRC Annual Winter Banquet: Our normal date for this event is the first Sunday in December, which would be December 3 rd. Due to a work conflict for Ryan it was agreed to switch to the second Sunday December 10 th. Ryan will talk to Bayside Supper Club to reserve the 10 th for the event, but he feels that there should not be a problem. We will have the same schedule and menu as in the past. Social Hour will start at 3:00 PM, with the meal served at 4:00 PM. Ryan will also check for any change in the cost. Annual Holiday Charitable Donation: Due to not always having sufficient attendance for a quorum of voting members, Ryan, KB9OWD, suggested that we pre-approve payment for our annual Christmas donation with selection of the recipient organization to be determined at the December meeting. A motion was made by Jerry Arndt, NO9U, to authorize $ for this donation with second by Len Buchda, KB9GDY. A vote was taken and the motion passed. The monthly RRRC breakfast will be held as usual at the Village Garden Restaurant in Juneau on Saturday, October 7 th, at 8:00 AM. * * * * * * * * * * Business was concluded and a motion to adjourn was made by Ralph Hasler, N9WBL, and seconded by Gary Pedersen, KA9BAE. The motion was passed and the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 PM. Respectfully Submitted, Dennis Weigel, KC9ICA Secretary, Rock River Radio Club
