4 Making information easier to understand We worked with Poole Forum to make an easy read guide about how to make a complaint. We made a video about Healthwatch Dorset with Bournemouth Deaf Club. 5 NHS dental care How often do you see a dentist? We worked with Healthwatch across the country to find out what people think about dental care. We found that these things could be better: seeing a dentist information making a complaint Read the full report at 5

6 NHS complaints We asked people what it is like to make a complaint about the NHS in Dorset. Lots of people said they felt fobbed off. They felt that they were told things to keep them quiet and that their complaint was not listened to properly. The NHS in Dorset is now making changes so that people will feel they are more likely to be listened to. We filmed an interview with 1 of the people who took part in our project about complaints. 7 Care home visits Healthwatch Dorset visited 8 care homes in Dorset. We found that people do different types of activities, which is good. But the way this is planned could be more personal. Our ideas for how support can be made more personal are in our report called, I m still me. 8 The future of NHS services in Dorset NHS Dorset Clinical Commissioning Group has been working on plans for health services. We gave the Clinical Commissioning Group advice on how to find out what people in Dorset think of their plans. We gave advice on getting people involved and listening to what they think. 8

9 Be Yourself: Everybody Else is Taken We celebrated artwork made by 100s of children and young people at an event at AFC Bournemouth. The artwork was made to help change the way people think about mental illness. Joely Colmer, who has Asperger s Syndrome was the main speaker. 11 It starts with you Joely Colmer has been a Healthwatch Champion for 3 years. She uses her own experiences to help others. Fiona Smith and Mrs Rosetta West spoke up about the ambulance service. Healthwatch Dorset helped them to tell their story to other people. Joely, Fiona and Mrs West have been nominated for national awards. This is because they have helped people to speak up, and they have also spoken up about Healthwatch Dorset. 14

13 Our Community Partners We are supporting 12 projects this year, including: Yewstock School Radio Club for young people with learning disabilities. Flourish Project - helping people who use drug, alcohol or homelessness services. Carers Project - working with older carers who are men. Yewstock Radio Club Carers Group 17

14 Our Board We speak up about what is important for local people: At Bournemouth and Poole Health and Wellbeing Board At local council Health and Social Care meetings At local groups and forums You can find out more on our website: Money Healthwatch Dorset gets money from Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole councils. In : We got in 402,030. We spent 375,735 on staffing and office costs. We spent 17,752 on projects and communication. 18

15 What will we be working on over the next year? Speaking up about children and young people s mental health and wellbeing. Checking GP and community health services; checking plans for changes to GP services. Checking healthcare for people in care homes; working with older carers who are men. Making sure people are involved in future plans for health and social care. Carrying on with all of our usual work, like work on community projects and working with local people. 20
