1 The Urodynamics Clinic Information for women and partners The Endoscopy & Treatment Unit Phone Follow Ref: Review: 02/2015 Revised review date: 30/04/2018
2 The Urodynamics Clinic This booklet contains information about the procedure and what you should do before attending the clinic. Please phone the Endoscopy & Treatment Unit between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, to confirm that you will be attending. The phone number is If you are having a period at the time of your appointment, tampons will need to be removed during the procedure. If you prefer, you may change your appointment. Please arrive with a full bladder. What to bring Please complete the bladder chart as it forms part of the test and bring it to your appointment. The days do not have to be consecutive - they can be any three days, but should if possible reflect home and work days. A cheap plastic jug will be accurate enough to measure your urine. Urodynamics Urodynamics is the recording of pressures within the bladder by use of special equipment. The recordings help us identify the cause of your problems and advise you on appropriate treatment. The procedure takes approximately one hour. During the procedure, one fine catheter will be passed into your bladder. You may experience some discomfort when the tubes are inserted. A similar catheter will be passed into your rectum (back passage). The procedure A nurse will discuss your problems and medical history with you and make some notes. You will then be asked to change into a hospital gown. You will be attended by a female nurse during the procedure. Your privacy will be maintained at all times. You will then be asked to pass urine. Then you will lie on a couch and your bladder will be scanned, fine catheters will be passed
3 gently into your bladder and rectum. Different measurements will be taken throughout the procedure as your bladder is filled with sterile fluid. Some people experience a little discomfort during the procedure, but it should not be painful. The tubes will be connected to a machine that takes various measurements of the pressure inside your body. Different measurements will be taken throughout the procedure. You will be given simple instructions and asked about the sensations you feel. When your bladder is full you will be asked to do some gentle provocation exercises, such as coughing. This is to check for any leakage from your bladder. When you have emptied your bladder the catheters will be removed and your bladder may be re-scanned. You may then change back into your own clothes. If a consultant is present details of your next appointment or treatment will be discussed. There is a very minimal risk of cystitis (water infection) after this procedure. To minimise this risk, please drink plenty of water for the rest of the day. If you are worried about any aspect of the procedure, please contact the clinic on Please ask to speak to the urodynamic clinic nurse. General advice to help your bladder problems wear cotton underwear avoid wearing tights wash underwear in pure soap, not detergents avoid using fabric softeners avoid washing between your legs more than twice a day wash in pure, unperfumed soap, eg Simple soap. Do not use any additives such as bath salts, bubble bath, Radox, Dettol, or Savlon, in your bath or shower
4 avoid the use of tampons as much as possible drink plenty of water, but avoid large amounts of tea, coffee or hot chocolate minimise your intake of fruit and pure fruit juice some people find avoiding the use of coloured toilet paper also helps. For any queries regarding your appointment please call ETU on Please note that if you think you may have an infection contact the clinic nurses. Thank you for your co-operation. Smoke-free hospital For the benefit of your health, all Trust buildings and grounds are smoke-free. Please do not smoke in any area. If you would like help to stop smoking, please telephone for further information. References Nov 2011
